I'm Ike Smith.
Here are a few things about me in no particular order:
I'm a transplant from New York (upstate, not the city -- check out our local delicacy, spiedies) and have lived in North Carolina since 2005.
I'm a proud two-time UNC Chapel Hill alum -- Go Heels!
I've worked as an educator in North Carolina for thirteen years. I taught high school English, worked in administrative roles in a K-12 school system central office and higher education student support center, and now coach beginning teachers with the NC New Teacher Support Program.
I have the pleasure and privilege to be married to my wonderful wife, who I met in college (great stories -- she didn't like me at all when we first met, we student taught together, etc). In May 2022, we welcomed our beautiful and hilarious daughter. Being parents is exhausting and awesome.
Being an educator is a huge part of my identity, but apart from that, my non-work interests include...
Coffee. I own not less than nine different ways to brew coffee (and I am aware this is absurd). My all time favorite is the Bodum Pebo siphon pot, and my daily driver is a Moccamaster KBGV Select.
Board & video games. Pandemic is a favorite on the board game side, and I'm currently playing No Man's Sky on Nintendo Switch.
Escape rooms. I travel about once a year with some high school friends to various places, and a priority is doing escape rooms. The best we've ever done (incredible detail and unique puzzles) is "Weirder Stuff" at the locally-owned Fifth Wall Escape Rooms in Detroit.
Vinyl records. I started my collection by stealing from my parents, and it's been growing ever since. One of my centerpieces is the Beatles "blue box," and my most recent acquisition is Way Out West by the legendary (and wonderfully-named) Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives.
Community theatre. I started in high school drumming in the pit orchestra for Anything Goes, and this has remained a hobby I really enjoy (though I've been on a bit of a hiatus lately). Notable roles have included Milky White in Into the Woods (for which I won my theatre's Best Supporting Actor role that season), Septimus Hodge in Tom Stoppard's Arcadia, and Hal in Proof.
Drumming. I've been playing since 5th grade (less frequently of late) and have always loved it. I really cut my teeth playing in jazz ensemble in high school, and I checked off a bucket list item when I joined a rock band in college.
Podcasts. I'm a huge podcast listener -- they're what make chores around the house or long drives bearable for me. My gateway was This American Life, and current favorites include My Brother, My Brother, and Me; its spinoff The Adventure Zone; and Dungeons and Daddies. My latest listen is a really interesting series on the creation of the Concorde.
