Purpose of the research:
To study the effects of creatine supplementation on endurance post-race cognition and recovery.
Am I eligible?
You are being invited to participate because you are a healthy male or female runner
Between the ages of 18-65 years old
Have the intention to race at one of Tanawha Adventure events: HAROC , Mt. Mitchell Heartbreaker, Ridge to Rails, Table Rock, Fonta Flora
You agree to train normally while avoiding the consumption of large-dose sports supplements, herbs, and medications that influence inflammation and muscle damage for the duration of the 5-day supplementation period
You have a smartwatch that tracks your physical activity
You are a non-smoker
If you volunteer to take part in this study, you will be one out of about 38 runners to do so
Willing to join Strava and share your Strava data with the PI
Are there reasons I should not take part in this research?
You should not take part in this study if you are not at least 18 years of age
Weigh less than 110 pounds
Has consumed creatine supplementation in the past 3 months
Have an acute or chronic infection or inflammatory disease
Use of daily medications or supplements influencing inflammatory and muscle damage for the duration of the 5-day supplementation period
Have had an ankle, hamstring, or hip injury in the last three months
You are a smoker
You have a pacemaker or other electrical implants
If you are not willing to share your Strava data with the PI
What will I be asked to do?
You will be asked questions related to your eligibility, and medical history to participate in the study. This will happen electronically.
If you agree to be part of this research, you will take part in one testing session on the race site at one of the Tanawha Adventure events: Mt. Mitchell Heartbreaker, Ridge to Rails, Table Rock, Fonta Flora
Fill out dietary recalls and upload screenshots of your heart rate variability (HRV) from your watch
Consume a creatine or a placebo for 5 days. You will consume 20 g/day. During this period, you will maintain your training
You will be given a shaker bottle to mix the supplement powder
Have your blood drawn pre- and post-race by a trained phlebotomist
If you do not have a Strava account, you will be required to sign up and create an account
Send your Strava account name and photo through a protected and secure site
Complete three 12-minute runs following the race within a 30-minute drive where you live on a flat non-gravel or trail terrain
