Executive Functions 101

Executive Functions = the control center of your brain!

This is an illustration of a human brain with the 5 main sections labeled: Frontal Lobe, Parietal Lobe, Occipital Lobe, Cerebellum, and Temporal Lobe.

Executive Functions are controlled by the prefrontal cortex. This part of the brain develops throughout adolescence and isn't fully matured until approximately age 25 (Arain et al, 2013).

This means that some level of difficulty with Executive Function skills is developmentally appropriate prior to 25!

"Executive Function" is an umbrella term, or term used to cover a broad category of things rather than a single specific item.
