Below is a pacing guide we developed for the anchor text, A Crack in the Sea. Included in the pacing guide are ideas for mini-lessons, activities to assess and extend comprehension, dialogic discussion questions based on the read alouds for that day, and suggestions for companion texts from our text set to read alongside different parts of the novel. Each day there are suggested page numbers that we have selected for homework, read alouds, and independent practice. We have calculated the number of pages that should be read each day by looking at reading rates of the average teacher and the average seventh grade student. All of the mini-lesson strategies that have been included in the pacing guide can be found in Jennifer Serravallo's book titled The Reading Strategies Book (Serravallo, 2015). Included in the pacing guide is an example mini-lesson with an example think aloud script and anchor chart.
