Rather than have students bring in sugary treats, our team has come up with a list of options for students to choose one from if they wish to celebrate their birthday. This is to ensure a more equitable experience for all students. For the same reasons, all birthday invitations must be given outside of school unless everyone in the class is invited. Students may put invitations in student mailboxes first thing in the morning. Thank you for your support.
Please communicate with your teacher at least one week in advance letting them know of your child's choice.
1. Class Birthday Book
Each child in the class makes a page for the birthday child’s Birthday Book. A page consists of a picture and a positive statement about the birthday child – something that is admired or appreciated. The birthday child makes the cover. The teacher makes a page, too, and all the pages are bound in a special book for the birthday child to take home.
2. Show and Tell
They can make a poster, bring in some of their favorite things, bring pictures, tell the kids about their favorite things or life at their house, etc.
3. Dance Party or Extra Recess Time
Ask the teacher if you can send in a dance song, and have the whole class do the hokey pokey, the chicken dance, or the booty slide, whatever is your child’s favorite!
4. Favorite Book to Share
The student may bring their favorite book to have the teacher read to the class.
5. Gift to the Class
Instead of treats, the child brings a special book to add to the class library. The child or the teacher writes who gave the book and what birthday he or she is celebrating on the inside front cover. The child or teacher reads the book to the class (or a favorite part if it is a chapter book). Students may also bring a plant, an item for classroom recess use, or a game to be used in the classroom. Another option is to bring in small items for each child, such as fun erasers, pencils, stickers, tops, mini notepads/pencils, mini coloring books/crayons, birthday bracelet bands, matchbox cars, bookmarks, mini puzzles, etc.
