School theme: Art of Explanation
Our theme for STEAM 2021-22 is Adapt, Protect, Restore. This theme aims to build on our school’s legacy of campaigning for change within our school and the local community.
We are a UNCRC Rights Respecting school where we teach an innovative curriculum placing the Sustainable Development Goals at the fore. Our STEAM curriculum reflects this by having an ethical dimension within an interdisciplinary approach. We encourage our children to become changemakers by inspiring them with a real life context to their learning.
This year, we have two main strands running across the school. One will focus on classification, health and movement of animals. This will highlight the following Global Goals: Life on Land, Good Health and Wellbeing, Sustainable Cities and Communities. In teaching this, the children will develop skills in food technology, product design, data analysis, animal conservation and even prosthetic and puppet design.
The other will focus on states of matter and materials, where the children will work as scientists to develop their skills in conducting experiments, classifying, pattern seeking and most importantly, using these experiments to propose solutions for current global challenges. The Global Goals to draw attention to are: Sustainable Cities and Communities, Responsible Consumption and Production, Climate Action. The children will be inspired to work as meteorologists, chemists, experimental chefs and engineers to develop their skills in further real life contexts.
The concept of the ‘Art of Explanation’ aims to encourage children to explain scientific processes and concepts through the medium of art.
