World Language instruction in Spanish is offered to students in grades one through five at all four elementary schools. Learning a language at an early age helps students become effective communicators, and allows students to understand culture at a deeper level. The elementary world language program teaches Spanish through art, songs, games and engaging learning activities that connect to the themes included in grade level curricular themes.

The elementary world language program is an exploratory experience in Spanish, based on ACTFL's Language Proficiency Guidelines and World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. The five “C” goal areas are Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. The elementary Spanish program prepares students to apply their language and cultural proficiency skills both within and outside of the school setting. Grade 5 Spanish Units
Each of our units are based on "Can Do" statements with the goal of students reaching a Novice Mid Proficiency Level. Every year we will focus on a different Spanish speaking country to highlight in our curriculum. (The country of focus in Grade 5 is Spain.) Students will make connections and comparison with these countries and their own.

Unit 1:
¿Qué hay que ver
en la ciudad?
What is there to do in the city?

  • I can describe myself and say what I like to do

  • I can say what is there to see and do in Barcelona

  • I can say what is there to see and do in South Windsor CT

  • I can make comparisons to city activities and places in South Windsor and Barcelona

Unit 2:
Mis clases en la escuela
My School Day

  • I can say what is my favorite subject and why

  • I can say why is it important to learn a certain subject

  • I can talk about my school day

  • I can share my daily schedule: …(in the morning, afternoon, it’s time for..)

  • I can describe my classes and activities I do at school

  • I can compare & contrast my school day/ to other countries

Unit 3:
Si los animales
pudieran hablar
If animals could talk

  • I can share my emotions

  • I can describe my surrounding using my five senses

  • I can express my needs (as an endangered animal point of view)

  • I can express my own needs and wants

Unit 4:
¡A explorar y proteger
el medio ambiente!
Let's explore and protect
the environment!

  • I can identify some of the land features of Spain

  • I can compare CT and US land features to those in Spain

  • I can talk about the environment

  • I can describe climate, the seasons and weather

  • I can compare actions that are good for the environment to those that are harmful
