Tracy Lopez

K-12 Music Curriculum Program Coordinator

South Windsor’s music curriculum reflects the National Core Arts Standards and embodies a balanced approach to music education that places equal importance on creating, performing, responding and connecting to music. Through development of musical independence, students will have the tools necessary to communicate their ideas when performing, creating or responding to music. The South Windsor music program provides students with a unique platform for self-expression and creativity.

The music education program at the elementary level provides students with instruction in the elements of music, creating a foundation for further learning at the secondary levels. Students learn to read and write music along with developing listening skills necessary to critically evaluate musical performances. Through the elementary music experience, students will relate their music experiences with other areas of academic study as well as make connections to other cultures. Students cultivate their learning through various performance opportunities both in and out of school. The mission of the music department is to provide each student with:

  • The necessary skills to become musically literate

  • Opportunities for public performances

  • An appreciation for and understanding of the societal, cultural, artistic, and emotional connections we share through music

  • An opportunity to develop necessary life skills; self-discipline, empathy, self-expression, resiliency, responsibility, patience, and teamwork

  • The desire to be life-long learners that appreciate and encourage music as a means of expression and creativity

  • Opportunities for cross curricular and cross cultural experiences and learning

  • A means to interact with students of other abilities and backgrounds
