GCSE Mathematics Grade 8 or 9. Please note, students who wish to study the A Level must also study A Level Mathematics.
Further Mathematics is a rigorous subject which develops and extends the topics covered in A Level Mathematics. It is an ideal preparation for students who want to follow degrees that require a high level of mathematical ability such as Mathematics, Engineering and Physics that require a high level of mathematical ability. An A-Level in Further Mathematics shows the interest, ability and commitment necessary for these demanding courses, which can lead to fulfilling careers.
Further Pure Mathematics, including Complex Numbers, Series, Numerical Solutions, Matrix Algebra and Differential Equations
Further Statistics
Further Mechanics
By examination only in June of Year 13; assessed as four exam papers. Two papers cover the Core Pure Mathematics; the third covers Further Statistics and the fourth covers Further Mechanics.
As in A-Level Mathematics, you will take part in individual work, problem solving, collaborative work and reasoning. You will develop your independent learning and reasoning skills, which are essential skills in higher education.
Further Mathematics is a highly regarded academic subject which would be useful for any career involving high level of numerical ability and logical, analytical or creative thinking. If you intend to study Mathematics, Physics or Engineering at university then it is often advisable to study Further Mathematics to A Level. It allows you to stand out in a competitive field and gives you appeal if applying for Oxbridge courses.
You may be able to take part in the UK Mathematics Senior Mathematics Challenge. This will further your mathematical understanding through different ways of thinking, including applying reasoning and logic and lateral thinking.
