Fluency

Interruptions in speech (repetitions, filled pauses, false starts, incomplete phrases, revisions, prolongations, blockage in flow of speech, secondary struggle or avoidance behaviors) which interfere with communication and are inconsistent with age and development.

Ideas to help your child:

  • Slow down your speech.
  • Ask fewer questions.
  • Work on having family members take turns during family conversations, and make sure to let each person express their idea before another person speaks.
  • The book "A Boy And A Jaguar" tells the story of a successful biologist who finds a way to accept and feel in control of his stuttering.
  • If your child has learned, and had some success with, techniques such as "stretchy speech," "easy onsets," or slowing down speech, practice using his/her favorite technique during a structured activity such as playing a game, or reading.
