It's hard to believe that another school year is just around the corner! I started my teaching career in the sunny state of California at the start of the 2005-2006 academic year, but prior to this I taught Kindergarten Enrichment through the YMCA.Ā During this time I've taught exceptional learners in various capacities, including private school, after-school tutoring, summer camps, ESY, and online. I've been an art teacher and have taught honors classes, general education, and special education. I am thrilled to be returning to Leota Middle School this year!Ā
As a teacher, I am committed to creating a fun, safe, and inclusive learning environment for all students. I believe that every child has the potential to succeed and that as educators, it's our job to help them reach their full potential. My goal as a teacher is to inspire and empower my students to become lifelong learners and critical thinkers.Ā
Having said that.... when I'm not in the classroom, you can find me exploring the great outdoors or playing around in the dirt... gardening. It's a great escape, because once, I tried to teach my plants to do math, but they all ended up with square roots.
As a child, IĀ knew I wanted to do two things in life: be an artist and teach. I attended a junior college for my AA degree and an AAS degree in computer graphics. During my first career, I happily worked as a graphic artist designing ads, billboards, comic books, illustrations, and many other visual aides.Ā Then, I segued into education. I obtained my general education credential (alongside English Language Learner requirements) with an emphasis in Art Education. From there, I was hooked on teaching and started working with students with disabilities. Before long, I had my special education credential, with the additional Autism Spectrum Disorders designation, by taking classes at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) and the University of California, Los Angeles (U.C.L.A). You can't see a thing when it's foggy in Los Angeles, but once the fog clears U.C.L.A. But, I digress. I went on to earn a Master's Degree in Education in Curriculum and Instruction.Ā It was well worth the time invested.
So you are aware, information and assignments will always be recorded in ParentVUE/StudentVUE and in our new Learning Management System (LMS) - Schoology. Assignments will be pushed out digitally (when possible) and students provided copies of the assignments under the given assignment when it is posted to Schoology. Schoology is the first place to look for upcoming assessments and assignments; it is updated by 3pm on Fridays; check ParentVUE/StudentVUE for grades only. If we have snow-days or your student is absent, Schoology is one way to get caught up.Ā Ā
It is more important to me that students not only develop good work habits, but that they learn from their mistakes! At any time, students can re-submit work for a higher grade. Students can also retake classroom assessments (after studying)Ā for a higher score. I am available to support students before school, at Pride, lunch, or after school. All I ask is that students let me know beforehand and show up!Ā I am also willing to Zoom - especially if school is more of a social scene. I get it.Ā Iām close friends with 25 letters of the alphabet⦠I donāt know Y.
