Meet Miss Shuford

I am an elementary music teacher at East Ridge Elementary, where I have been teaching since 2020. I teach music to students in grades K–5 and lead an after-school choir program. I love creating a music classroom where every student can find a way to make music, be creative, and discover something they enjoy.

One of my biggest passions is Modern Band! In my classroom, students have the opportunity to learn how to play drumset, electric guitar, electric bass, and keyboard while playing music they know and love. Students learn the skills they need to play together as a band, listen and respond to one another, and even write and perform their own songs. I love seeing students discover that they don't have to wait until they're older to be musicians—they can start making the music they love right now!

Modern Band is just one part of our music program. Students also experience barred instrument ensembles, world drumming, singing, music theory, songwriting, and more. My goal is to give students a wide variety of musical experiences and help them discover the ways they most enjoy making and experiencing music.

Outside of my daily teaching, I am also the conductor of Prima, a private choir for singers ages 4–6 with Columbia Choirs. I have been part of Columbia Choirs since 2020 and love working with our youngest singers as they build confidence, musical skills, and a love of singing.

Where I Studied

Outside of the Classroom

When I'm not teaching, I love staying active with long walks and Pilates. I also love getting together with friends for regular craft nights, where I can keep my creative side busy in a completely different way. I am happiest when I am making something, learning something new, or spending time with people I love!
