At Maywood, we view holidays and celebrations through an equitable, inclusive, student centered lens. We acknowledge that it is not possible to celebrate or recognize all the special days that are celebrated in our community. We also want recognitions and celebrations to be inclusive so all families who wish to participate are able to do so.
To make this happen school wide:
Classroom teachers will survey families at the beginning of each school year and as new students join the classroom to identify events that are important to each family. Survey responses will be used to guide which events teachers will recognize and celebrate in their classroom community.
Music and Library specialists will incorporate inclusive, culturally responsive and social justice focused books and musical experiences into their lessons.
Celebrations and school decorations will focus on seasonal changes and include elements common to many cultures. For example:
Halloween/October 31: Focus will be on a Fall or Harvest theme, costumes are optional. A costume bank will be maintained at MH for students who want a costume but do not have access. Costumes must be school appropriate, free of cultural appropriation and will be worn for the duration of the classroom celebration.
Costume Information: Cultural Appropriation at Halloween: My Culture is not a Costume
December Holidays: School-wide, decorations are neutral and focus on elements that are common to many cultures (such as light or food).
Valentines Day/ Feb. 14: Friendship theme/Kindness Week. Card exchanges are optional. Art supplies to make cards and a card bank will be maintained at MH so all students who want them have access to cards and supplies.
The MH REJ (Racial and Educational Justice) team in partnership with the MH PTA FACE (Family and Community Engagement) Committee will publish a list of resources in advance of each month highlighting upcoming events and celebrations. Resources will be provided to support teachers observing these events.
