(Washington Kindergarten - Inventory of Developing Skills)
The Washington Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills (WaKIDS) is a transition process that helps to ensure a successful start to the K-12 experience and connect the key adults in a child’s life. These data help inform state and district-level decisions about education policy and investments, and classroom decisions about individualized learning.
You will be contacted by our office to set up a "Wa-Kids conference". This will be a 30 minute family (child and adults) meeting held on September 3rd, 4th or 5th in your child's classroom and run by your child's Kindergarten Teacher. (Kindergarten will not have school these 3 days for this purpose) Teachers will send a questionnaire electronically that will need to be filled out prior to your assigned conference time. The meeting is focussed on onboarding the teacher to learn about your child and to build a teaming relationship between school and home.
The Whole-child Assessment is not a test, but a practice that allows teachers to observe children while they're engaged in everyday activities (transitions, instruction, learning centers, etc.) This is an opportunity for children to show their skills, knowledge, and abilities in an authentic way as they interact with the learning environment.
The Whole-child Assessment uses an observational assessment tool, GOLD®, to observe, collect documentation, and level children’s knowledge skills and abilities across the 6 areas of development and learning:
Social-emotional | Physical | Cognitive | Language | Literacy | Mathematics
