Competition Rules
1. Participants must correctly evaluate indefinite single variable integrals in the time allotted by the Judges.
2. All participants will be given the same integral.
3. Any non-numerical integration technique may be used.
4. No electronic devices (i.e., calculators, PDA’s, cell phones, watches, etc.), printed materials, books, or notes will be allowed during the competition.
5. For Round I, once the integral is evaluated, contestants will turn their final responses face down and wait until further instructions are given.
6. After Round I is complete, the Judges will choose the top participants who will advance to the Round II based upon the number of correct integrals in Round I. It is up to the discretion of the Judges as to the number of people who will move on to Round II.
7. Beginning in Round II, all contestants will be allowed to miss one integral. After a second miss, the contestant will be eliminated.
8. If an integral is given that no student can solve, the integral will not count as a miss against the contestants.
9. Students will not be penalized for leaving out arbitrary constants or omitting absolute value bars.
10. The judges will have full discretion as to what integrals will be used throughout the contest, and as to the correctness of the answer.
11. During Round II, when a contestant is finished working on an integral, they may put down their pen as an indication to the judges that what they have given is to be their final answer.
12. There will be an official timekeeper who will be in control of the amount of time that the participants are allowed for each integral. The time for each integral will be announced. The judges have the discretion to extend the announced time, but not to shorten it. Shortly before time is up, there will be a warning given by the timekeeper, for example, “There are 30 seconds remaining”.
13. The person who achieves the first place position will be crowned as the CRC Integration Bee Champion. Prizes will be awarded to all participants who make it to Round II.
14. All contestants will receive a certificate of participation.
15. All paperwork from Round I will be kept by the Judges.
