Welcome to Class! - Classes Begin January 17, 2026

I hope all of you are enjoying a break between semesters.

For Spring 2026, I will be teaching partly in person and partly online. I have taught for over 20 years in traditionally taught, in-person courses, fully online courses (for over 20 years, too!), and hybrid courses. See page 49 (print page 47) of the ARC College Catalog for descriptions of those course modalities.

If college learning is new to you, you may be a bit nervous about your upcoming classes, and the good news is that your classmates and I will all be available to assist you - no one works all alone in my courses!

I am on winter break from Dec. 18 - Jan. 17, so there will be delays in my responses during this period.

Orientation - Required for All of My Courses

For all of my ONLINE courses:

Online courses meet 100% of the time online, via the Los Rios Canvas site.

- An online orientation is REQUIRED to be completed for all of my courses.
- The orientation will be available beginning Day 1 of classes.
- The orientation consists of reading, watching videos, and completing a quiz.
- At most, it should take students an hour to complete the orientation, and the orientation will provide a means of becoming familiar with navigating the course site as well as assignments and course policies so that students may then spend the rest of the semester learning about psychology and NOT trying to figure out where to find materials for the course 👍😊
- Submitting the orientation quiz provides documentation that a student attended, participated in class, and completed the orientation.
- Don't let this happen to you! Any enrolled students who do not submit the quiz for the orientation by 11:59 PM by Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026 will be considered a "no show" and will be replaced by a student from the waiting list. Show up, do the work, and ask questions as those come up for you, and I will gladly assist!

I look forward to "seeing" you online as you complete the orientation.

For Tuesday/Thursday, ON-CAMPUS Courses:

My campus-based courses are taught on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All of my campus-based, in-person courses also have an online component and are considered "web enhanced" - see page 49 (print page 47) of the ARC College Catalog for a description.

This class meets 100% of the time in person AND there are assignments each week only accessed via the course site: all quizzes, exams, and many written assignments are administered and submitted online via the Canvas site. Attendance is taken in class and online via a review of activity logs AND assignments submitted both in class and online. Students who do not want an online component to their in-person course should take this course with a different professor.

For my Tuesday/Thursday Psyc C1000 courses,

- An online orientation is REQUIRED to be completed for all of my courses.
- The orientation will be available on Canvas beginning Day 1 of classes: Day 1 occurs before our first class meeting, so students may get started early if they wish.
- The orientation consists of reading, watching videos, and completing a quiz.
- At most, it should take a students an hour to complete the orientation, and the orientation will provide a means of becoming familiar with navigating the Canvas site as well as assignments and course policies so that students may then spend the rest of the semester learning about psychology and NOT trying to figure out where to find materials for the course 👍😊

Psychology C1000 - Spring 2026

What to Expect

General Principles, Psyc C1000, introduces students to the field of psychology. The course provides a solid foundation for students with many different majors.
Tuesday/Thursday classes:
- Meet on Tuesdays AND Thursdays every week of the semester in the assigned classroom at the times specified on your class schedule.
- My Tuesday/Thursday courses are "web enhanced" - see page 49 (print page 47) of the ARC College Catalog for a description. In this case, the class course meets 100% of the time in person AND there are assignments each week only accessed via Canvas.
- You will have in class assignments, lectures, and other activities during the in-person class times.
- There are specific due dates for all graded work. Once an assignment is made available, students may always submit work early, but the due date and time is the last moment graded work is accepted for full credit. Details are found on the course syllabus which will be made available just before the semester starts.
Online courses:
- The courses are hosted on Canvas and is asynchronous, but not self-paced.
- What that means is that all students will be working on the same course assignments each week of the semester, but which days/times you do so during each week is up to you.
- There are specific due dates for all graded work.Once an assignment is made available, students may always submit work early, but the due date and time is the last moment graded work is accepted for full credit. Details are found on the course syllabus which will be made available just before the semester starts.

- Browser - any of the following: Chrome, Firefox, Safari (for Apple users) , Microsoft Edge
- Media Readers and Players - audio and video players capabilities for your browser and computer, and Adobe Reader or equivalent PDF reader.

Psychology 373 - Spring 2026

What to Expect

Child Psychology, Psych 373, introduces students to the "why" and the "how" of understanding children via psychological research.
My Child Psychology courses are all administered fully online this semester - I look forward to seeing you on Canvas !
The course is asynchronous but not self-paced.
- What that means is that all students will be working on the same course assignments each week of the semester, but which days/times you do so during each week is up to you.
- There are due dates for all graded work.
