Most Practicum Students are placed at the Cosumnes River College Child Development Center. The child development center works with the Early Childhood Education Department to provide placement and a qualified mentor teacher for students. ECE Faculty provide oversight and support within the lab setting in addition to the weekly lecture meeting with students. Currently, the CDC offers AM, MIDDAY, and PM placements on Mondays and Wednesdays OR Tuesdays and Thursdays during the hours of 7:30AM to 5:00PM.
Cosumnes River College is part of the Early Childhood Mentor Program and places students in a variety of community settings with Qualified Mentor Teachers whom have been selected into the Mentor Program and are reimbursed for their work with ECE Students. ECE Faculty provide oversight and support within the lab setting in addition to the weekly lecture meeting with students. NOTE: Due to the uniqueness of each Mentor Site, there may be additional expectations of students (i.e. fingerprinting) which are required by the placement site. Days and Hours of placement at Community Mentors vary based on the program hours at each site.
SEE MAP BELOW
Sometimes Students may be able to utilize their worksite as their practicum location. The criteria for worksite placement is high and many worksites, despite the quality, do not match the criteria for placement due to the Title 5 requirements and the need to support the course curriculum.
Review the "Worksite Practicum Placement Procedure" document below. You must review all of the Practicum Guidelines (above) to determine if your worksite qualifies. If you determine that your worksite qualifies, you must provide information to the Instructor in order to set up a site visit the week prior to the start of class. Worksite placements may not be approved and therefore the student will be placed at either the CDC or at a Community Mentor Placement.
YOU MUST HAVE A CHILD DEVELOPMENT MASTER TEACHER PERMIT QUALIFIED MENTOR WHO WORKS ALONGSIDE YOU 7-10 HOURS per week.
Students should gather all paperwork needed in electronic form (see Practicum Guidelines document above for immunizations needed).
Students will be placed in our course shell within Canvas the Saturday BEFORE class begins.
Log in with your CRC ID and password at: canvas.losrios.edu
Students must log into our Canvas course shell by the day of our orientation (listed within the course schedule) and complete the Online Orientation.
YOU WILL BE ASKED TO:
Upload electronic copy of your Measles, Pertussis, TB, and Flu Waiver/Flu Shot paperwork
Provide a copy of your weekly schedule which indicates your other commitments School, Work, etc. and options for lab placement. This must include TWO days (usually M/W or T/TH for at least 3.5 hours during regular business hours (7:30AM-5:00PM).
Complete a Survey which indicates preference of placement option and availability according to your schedule of availability (NOTE: Flexibility is greatly appreciated!)
Provide proof of Corequisite (if needed) and Unofficial Transcripts if your coursework is not recent and from Los Rios District.
Students MUST first review the information provided on this website on Worksite Placement and ensure that your workplace is:
1. Within 10 Miles of CRC Campus (or approved by your Instructor)
2. Have a Mentor Teacher available to them who has (or qualifies for) a Master Teacher Child Development Permit (through the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing). This will be verified through the Child Development Permit Index and/or equivalent Transcripts.
3. The Mentor Teacher can work alongside the Practicum Student for 3.5 Hours two days a week (consistent days M/W or T/Th) for the entire length of the semester and is available 1-3 additional hours per week to consult with the Student as needed for assignment support, signatures, consultation with faculty, etc.
4. The instructor will perform an initial site visit to ensure the Worksite Setting meets the requirements for the curriculum and requirements of an early childhood practicum including, but not limited to, age of children served, ratios, environment/materials support practicum coursework, licensed program, etc.
WORKSITE APPROVAL IS NOT GUARANTEED AND MAY BE LIMITED BY FACULTY AVAILABILITY.
