Artist Statement
As an artist, I've learned that to draw artfully is to treat your marks and your business with the page as you would treat a musical composition. Therefore, my mission as a draftsman is to be able to have the freedom to make each mark compliment the whole of the page so that together they create a symphony as the masters would have. The drawings that I submitted in this show are all figurative works all drawn from a live model and are all drawn on toned or colored paper using multiple drawing media. I enjoy working on toned paper and adopted it as my sole paper for drawing because of the range of values that I can achieve so effectively. With colored paper such as the rose or blue-toned paper, I can also work with the temperatures to create more of a painterly effect using pastels and white chalk. Ultimately when I am drawing figuratively I look to accentuate the work by thinking abstractly as much as I do representationally to create a masterful representation of the figure while also having movements of value across the page. That way I think it makes the art more intellectually stimulating and more aligned with how painters and master draftsmen represented figures throughout the history of painting.
