Artist Statement

"It was once said by the French painter Nicolas Poussin, that the essence of art or painting was "Marks and colors on a surface, representing everything under the sun, which the purpose of is delectation." The true business of painting as I have adopted it is exactly as Poussin said, and as a painter, I make it my responsibility to live up to this grand tradition by speaking the language of it. My influences happen to be masters who use color in a grand way, and have great control of line, form, values, and using them all with a great sense of space. I am especially influenced by the Venetian painters, specifically the school of Bellini, of whom Titian had said, "All a painter really needs is red, white, and black". The appeal of freedom of brushstroke and the quality of light and shade of the french painters such as Boucher, Watteau, and Fragonard are something that I also admire greatly. Of the moderns, I am affected heavily by the dynamic forms of Renoir's nudes, and the scenes depicted by Manet and Puvis de Chavannes to name a few.

All paintings too, I have made using hand-ground paint using oil refined by myself. I choose to make my own paint and materials not only for the craft but for cost, control of quality, and archival quality of the materials."
