1997-2021
Established 2021
Girl's hockey became an officially sanctioned Minnesota State High School league sport the winter of 1994-1995. St. Cloud school district along with Cathedral high school sported their first team, the St. Cloud Icebreakers the winter of 1997-1998. They finished with a record of 18-5.
St. Cloud Tech was able to break away from the Icebreakers and created their own team during the winter of 1999-2000. They were able to have their own team for 10 seasons including 4 straight Central Lakes Conference Championships from 2001-2005. They joined the Icebreakers co-op again in the winter of 2009-2010.
Between the Icebreakers and Tech Tigers, girl's hockey has earned 7 Central Lakes Conference championships and a Section 8AA runner up season in the 1999-2000 season.
There have been many great hockey players that have played high school hockey in St. Cloud including Division 1 athletes Holly Roberts, Andrea Herold, Steph Boeckman, Nikki Kassa, Abby Jacobs, Allie Cornelius, and Gabby Rud. Many more went on to compete at the Division 3 level. The most decorated St. Cloud player has been Anne Schleper who went on to compete 4 years at the University of Minnesota before capping off her hockey career earning a silver medal at the 2014 Sochi Olympics representing Team USA.
For the 25th season, a name change was made to brand all of St. Cloud school district's co-op teams between Apollo and Tech. We are excited to become the St. Cloud Crush during the 2021-2022 season. In the 25th season a celebration of the program was on January 31st that saw many alumni come back including Anne Schleper. Before the game Anne's #12 was officially retired by the Crush!
Monday January 31st, 2022
After many seasons of no St. Cloud high school girl hockey player wearing the #12 it was finally time to officially retire the number worn by Olympic Silver medalist Anne Schleper-Span.
With previous Breaker alumni (players, coaches, and even an AD) to help celebrate the 25 season of high school hockey in St. Cloud Anne's #12 was retired prior to the game vs Sartell-Sauk Rapids.
In her 5 seasons of playing for the St. Cloud Icebreakers (2003-2008) Anne put up 170 points as a defense and was named the St. Cloud Times Player of the Year twice in 2007 and 2008. She was named a Ms Hockey Finalist is 2008. She was a true leader on and off the ice, always putting her teammates first.
After graduating from St. Cloud Cathedral Anne went on to play 4 years at University of Minnesota Golden Gophers where she earned All WCHA Team in each of her 4 seasons including 3 time 1st team and WCHA Defensive Player of the Year. She ended her college career with 114 points on 32 goals and 82 assists.
Anne had prior National team experience playing twice on the U18 team and on the U22 team in 2008. She went on to win a Silver medal with Team USA at the 2014 Sochi games.
Anne has always given back to the game of hockey coming back to St. Cloud to give youth hockey clinics or growing the game in Tampa Bay, Florida.
