Middle School Football Parents/Guardians,
Introductions first...
I'm Mitchell Pace, head coach of the FMS football team (I'm a Fluco born and bred, high school history teacher, and have been coaching football at FCHS for over 15 years). My assistants are Amanda Richardson (school nurse at Carysbrook) and Raheem Barbour (self-employed, former Fluco player). We are very excited about the season, and thanks in advance for letting us work with your child.
Please read this email closely for key info to start the season, and feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.
Pre-Season Required Actions...
Your child MUST have a current VHSL physical, dated on or after May 1, 2021. Please be sure to complete all four pages before turning your physical in to me (on Aug. 9th or 10th) or Mrs. Miles (School Trainer) at FCHS anytime before then.
No physical = no participation! No exceptions!
Your child MUST be registered online for football (and any other sports in which he may play this year) using https://fluvannacounty-ar.rschooltoday.com/. If your child is going into 7th grade, select the Middle School option at the onset of registration. If your child is a rising 8th grader, select the High School.
Important Dates...
August 9th & 10th (Monday & Tuesday) ~
Equipment distribution and conditioning at FCHS football field from 3:30 - 5:30pm. I'd prefer for players to attend both days, but they must come at least one day. Since we will be practicing at the Middle School, it will make equipment access very difficult and will delay their participation if the player misses both Monday and Tuesday.
August 11th (Wednesday) ~
First day of practice (and first day of school)! We will practice at FMS on Monday - Friday from 3:45 - 6:00pm for the duration of the season (unless otherwise announced).
August 30th (Monday) ~
First game at home vs Locust Grove (Orange MS) at 5pm. The rest of the schedule will be posted on the FCHS and FMS athletic websites.
Other Important Info ~
As our team is made up of students from two different school buildings with different schedules, 7th grade players will have a mandatory study hall every day before practice at FMS (until 8th graders arrive) from approx. 2:45-3:20pm. I expect them to use this time wisely to ensure they maintain good academic standing. Exact location in FMS TBD.
8th grade players will be transported from FCHS to FMS everyday after the school day is complete. They will meet the bus at 3:30pm on the FCHS bus ramp; bus # TBD.
Players will be required to bring their own water bottles to practice each day as we are still working within COVID guidelines. Water refill will be available.
Storage of large equipment (pads, helmets, cleats, etc.) will be made available to players at FMS, but they must take home their own washables (socks, undershirts, etc.) each day as they will not have access to an individual locker.
Unlike youth league football, we don't use football pants with "integrated pads" so your child will need a girdle to wear underneath of practice and game pants (both of which will be provided by us). If you do not know, a girdle is essentially compression underwear that has integrated pads (everything except knee pads, which will also be provided by us). Our football program will have SOME girdles available, but there will be limited numbers and most of them will be too large for middle school kids, so I recommend you purchase your own girdle if you can afford to do so. They can be purchased online, but also available at Dick's and other sporting goods stores. They should fit snug so they do not move or slide around as the player runs, tackles, etc.
The only other equipment purchase requirements are cleats (please keep them to simple colors... black, white, or navy blue; nothing different than our school colors). And for games, they will be required to wear calf length black or navy blue socks (which we will NOT provide).
All Middle School football players must download the “Remind” app and register using the below information. This is how myself and Coach Morris will communicate with the team.
Send a text message to… 81010
The message should only say… @fluvannam
Then follow the registration prompts.
Again, thank you for letting me coach your child this season and I look forward to winning some football games!
Coach Pace

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 14, 2020
VHSL will not require masks to be worn in games and practices
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – On December 10, the VHSL announced that it “is requiring each school to follow the recommendations of the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)” that students and coaches wear masks while participating in sports. This requirement was issued in response to information that the Governor’s Requirement to Wear Face Coverings would include such a provision. However, EO 72 when issued stated that Face Coverings requirements “do not apply to … individuals exercising or using exercise equipment.”
“VHSL apologizes for any confusion created by its original release,” said VHSL Executive Director, Dr. John W. “Billy” Haun. “We ask the public to understand that it is the first mission of VHSL to make sure that athletics are conducted in a safe and healthy environment, and it was that desire that motivated the original decision.”
Accordingly, VHSL is rescinding its “requirement” that face coverings be worn during training and competition and is reissuing its guidance to conform with the intent of EO 72 that face masks are “strongly encouraged” but not required. Each school may continue to exercise its discretion and judgment as to safety steps within its athletics programs as it pertains to face coverings.
