Special Education

Hello! I'm Ms. Simmering and I teach reading, writing, and organization for students in special education in 7th and 8th grades. I attended Winona State University to obtain my Elementary and Special Education Teaching Licence with an emphasis in Reading. Then, after I began teaching at FHS, I earned my Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Southwest State University. Even though this is my 21st year at FHS, I am still finding new things to learn about education and our students. Fairmont is my hometown. I even attended and graduated from FHS (a few) years ago! I live here with my twin sons, Grant and Carter who are both in 1st grade this year!

Outside of school, I enjoy playing outdoors with my kids on the trampoline, at the pool, or at the parks. We also go fishing and camping often too. I enjoy music, play piano, and sing. Watching movies and reading are my favorite personal quite time activities.

I'm so excited to spend my year in my classroom with my students. This is a "Beach" year and my classroom is ready for us to relax together, learn together, and dream of warm sandy beaches, seagulls calling, and ocean waves lapping!

~If you were absent, please ask me upon arrival what was missed

~Check my Google Classroom to see what resources or assignments are there

~If you plan to be absent, please give me your Absence Request Form from the office and I will write in what we will be doing while you are gone.

~Take Responsibility for Your Learning and check in with me before, during, and after your absence as needed.


If you would like to explore topics in greater depth or would like to work ahead:

~Access iLit and read your self-selected leisure book

~Ask for additional assignments in iLit, specifically if there are skills you know you need to work on

~Access Read Works comprehension selections

~Make a copy of your Fluency Passage for the week and practice outside of class

~Practice the sight words list on your own or with a partner

~Review your reading and writing goals and know them

~Review your data charts and graphs and determine your track for meeting your goal
