AVID is schoolwide when a school is systematically and intentionally using AVID approaches across the entire building to benefit all students and educators, setting the foundational transformation of a school through its Instruction, Systems, Leadership, and Culture to ensure college and career readiness for all students.
AVID students reflect and question while mastering content rather than just repeating and memorizing. Our students work together to problem solve and to change the level of discourse in the classroom as they prepare for success. Students are taught to articulate what they don’t understand and learn how to seek out the resources they need. By teaching critical thinking, inquiry, and self-advocacy, AVID educators empower students to own their learning.
WICOR is an instructional approach that places students at the center of their learning by empowering them to take ownership and agency of their thinking and learning. Each component includes strategies that engage both teachers and students. WICOR involves intentional instructional decision-making by teachers to provide students with opportunities to demonstrate what they know and what they can do with rigorous course content, which in turn builds skills and behaviors that support college and career readiness.
This instructional approach involves a scaffolded process of skill-building that begins in elementary school. Students gradually develop autonomy and demonstration of mastery of content through their K–12 journey. Teachers in all content areas can intentionally incorporate WICOR strategies into their daily lessons. WICOR strategies are effective in any instructional setting, including face-to-face, blended, and virtual learning.
The focus of our August LID professional learning was to introduce AVID and the 5 elements of WICOR, as well as expose teachers to several WICOR strategies.
The focus of our professional learning on October 13 was the Focused Note Taking process (FNT), how to choose the right format for note-taking, using One Pagers, and the World Cafe collaborative strategy.
The focus of our October 17 professional learning during the staff meeting is developing relational capacity with students.
What is Relational Capacity? Relational Capacity is the degree of trust and level of safety between members of a group. In an educational context, this specifically refers to the established level of trust and safety between teachers and students, as well as directly between students.
Some photos from the AVID elective class on Fun Fridays, where students play games that build their collaboration skills, problem solving skills, conflict resolution skills, and in general have a lot of fun.
