In first grade, the big idea expands to include the life cycle of other insects and well as their structures. They also raise painted lady butterflies to observe their stages but record more information in writing. They learn how to create labeled diagrams to show the structure. To learn more about insects, students do research using Pebble Go and participate in a WebQuest. The engineering design process is used to engineer students’ own insects. A script is written which students use to produce a recording. After the fair, first graders will apply their knowledge to the metamorphosis of butterflies and mealworm life cycle stages.
