Orchestra students play STRING instruments (violin, viola, cello, or bass).
Band students play WOODWIND (flute, clarinet, alto saxophone), BRASS (trumpet, trombone, baritone), and PERCUSSION instruments.
Meet the orchestra instruments
Students may choose either band or orchestra.
No. Band and orchestra are elective courses. We would encourage any interested student to join NOW in order to continue on in middle and high school. Band/orchestra students benefit from many special travel, performance, and scholarship opportunities!
After you complete the registration form, students will get to try out several instruments with the teacher during school before making a final instrument selection. Several factors must be considered in the instrument selection process, including personal interest, how well the student is suited to a particular instrument, and the need for balanced instrumentation. After this "instrument interview" we will send home paperwork and then you can go get an instrument!
Several local music stores offer instrument rent-to-purchase or rental programs. Monthly rental can range between $35 and $60 each month.
Please contact your child's teacher so they may check to see that it is in good playing condition.
The district owns a limited number of instruments. Students qualifying for free/reduced lunch are eligible to request to use a school instrument at no cost (no violins or saxophones are available). Instruments are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Starting in October, students are “pulled out” of their regular class for a 30-minute small group lesson each week.
Students are expected to practice 4-5 times a week for 20 minutes or more. A commitment to routine practice is critical in learning any new skill, and this is also true in learning to play an instrument.
There are no participation fees, and lesson books are provided by the school district. Students provide their own music stands and instrument supplies.
