5th grade seminar updates

Quantitative: Dream Vacation

Fifth graders will plan a 7-10 day trip for 4-6 people, staying within a budget of $10,000. Expenses will be tracked using Google sheets.

Week of Feb. 17: Students were introduced to the class and we went over the guidelines.

Week of Feb. 24: Everyone has downloaded Google Sheets onto their iPads and have opened a copy of the vacation template. Students should have renamed the document and then shared it with Mrs. Olson. They were shown how to look for airline flight information and were working on completing the first tab in the Google sheet: Planning.

Weeks of March 2 and 9: Students have seen different ways to find a rental car and activities in and near their destination. All prices for their major expenditures (flights, hotels, rental cars, activities) must be documented in their Google sheet.

Affective

Students who will be invited to participate in at least two of the three CogAT-themed classes (verbal, quantitative, non-verbal), based on CogAT and/or MAP scores, will be included in the affective seminar. This class began in September and finished in January. Fifth graders learned about emotional intelligence. We also spent time talking about our beliefs and values.

Non-Verbal: Crime Scene Investigation

October 31: This was our first session of CSI. Students viewed the crime scene for the first and only time, while examining some of the evidence more closely. Each week they will learn more about the mystery as they use deductive reasoning skills to figure out what happened. This class is taught every year, so to promote new learning for all students and maintain the enjoyment for everyone, all participants have promised not to share any specific details or information about this seminar with anyone, including classmates, siblings, and parents, both now and into the future. Thank you for respecting this request.

Nov. 7: Students learned more background information and were able to make some connections to the evidence they saw last week. We are starting to discuss the evidence and its relationship to our suspects.

Nov. 14: We finished going through the evidence from the crime scene and the students generated questions they have about the crime, suspects, and/or evidence.

Nov. 21: Investigations into some of the evidence has begun!

Dec. 5: The group did three new investigations together, and then they continued with the previous investigations from last week. Next week these will conclude.

Week of Dec. 16: All investigations are complete and groups are deciding on their theories. When this is done they will work on their final projects. Projects will be presented in January. There will be no class on January 9th due to DARE graduation. We will meet again on January 16th for our final session.
