Small Group Lessons:
The small group lesson time is designed to meet the needs of your child both academically and emotionally. This is their time to work on individual goals.
A band schedule will be posted in each fifth grade classroom. Students will leave their classroom for lessons once a week. Most lesson TIMES will rotate, but lesson DAYS will be the same each week. This rotating schedule will ensure that students do not miss the same class more than once or twice in a semester. Lessons will be twenty to thirty minutes in length, depending on the size of the group.
The goals of these lessons are to develop, within each individual, a solid understanding of basic musical concepts, a sense of responsibility to care for their instrument and music, and the ability to perform individually with an increased level of self-confidence. The work done in small group lessons transfers to all other academic subjects to increase their skill levels in all other areas.
Every 4th Grade student can join Band! Students will meet with Dr. Becker in March to try out and select an instrument and will begin lessons in the Fall at their school.
Instrument selection is based on the student's personal choice, physical characteristics (jaw structure, lip formation, hand and finger size) and the instruments needed to provide a well-balanced band. Dr. Becker will help 4th Grade students choose their instrument in March of 2022. More information will be sent home with students in February
Most instruments are rented from a music store unless you already own one. Information will be provided to families in the fall for the three music stores that service out district and their rental programs. Larger instruments such as French horn, baritone, and tuba, are rented directly from the school district.
Families who qualify for free or reduced school lunches will qualify for a scholarship for an instrument from the district's Band for All program, which provides donated instruments for students to play. These families can also receive a scholarship for a school owned French horn, baritone, or tuba. Information on requesting a band scholarship will be available in the fall.
If you already have an instrument your child will play, it is important it is in good playing condition. Instruments that are old or have been not played for some time often need the attention of a good repair person. Repairs can range from minor adjustments to major overhauls. Here are a few recommended local repair shops.
