Is STEAM right for me?

The DISD Advanced STEAM Program offers academics and acceleration in mathematics and science for 5th - 8th graders. Differentiated, interdisciplinary instruction in language arts, science, social studies, and mathematics is offered by highly trained teachers and staff in a learning community that focuses on the nature and needs of gifted and advanced learners. In STEAM, students have the opportunity to interact with their intellectual peers while participating in fine arts, athletics, and student activities. Focusing on student strengths and the nature and needs of academically advanced students, STEAM provides the environment necessary for developing creative, confident leaders. STEAM also helps students to understand themselves and their future goals through career exploration and real-world experiments through the lens of each subject area.

The Application Process...

Review STEAM goals and expectations as a family and decide if the Advanced STEAM Program is right for your student.

Apply for the Advanced STEAM program by completing the online form. Make sure you receive your confirmation email.

Each application is sorted by campus, reviewed thoroughly, and ranked using the application matrix.

Families are notified via email of student acceptance or denial. Campuses are then notified for student placement.

What we look at...

We look at student's grades from the current school year and previous years to see if they have previously been successful in their studies.

We analyze multiple assessments to determine a student's ability to be successful in the program. We use various data points to ensure one "bad day" does not affect a student's overall score.

Attendance is paramount when it comes to education and learning. Students need to be in school to keep up with the fast pace of Advanced classes in STEAM.

With the advanced curriculum, fast pace, and collaborative work environment presented in the STEAM classroom, student behaviors can affect their learning and others. Each student is reviewed on an individual basis.
