Fee Waivers
If you took the SAT with a Fee Waiver, free college application fee waivers are in your College Board account once your scores are available.
Qualify for a fee waiver, but don't know how to get one? Access the NACAC fee waiver form here, fill out your portion, and have it signed by your counselor.
Requesting Letters of Recommendation
A few things to remember with Letters of Recommendation:
Set the deadline to receive the recommendation approximately 1+ weeks before the letter is due to the scholarship, college, or employer. This will give you time to pick up, mail and/or hand-carry the letter to its destination.
Ask your recommender to keep an electronic copy for additional copies you may need in the future. *Sometimes an application will specifically state that you waive your rights to see the letter. Say yes.
Letters of Recommendation are meant to be an EXTENSION of your application. They already have your transcript, essays (if required), and resume. Bring more to the story by having a teacher shed light on other reasons you are a good candidate for scholarships and admission by highlighting things NOT already mentioned in your application. You can provide this within your Brag Sheet.
If the writer is supposed to mail the letter somewhere, provide a stamped addressed envelope. Politely check with the writer to be certain the letter was completed and/or mailed/sent. (“How’s my letter coming? Do you need any more information?”)
Write a short thank-you note/email to each person who writes you a letter of recommendation
AFTER they have completed the letter of rec. If you get into college, get the scholarship, or get the job, let the writer know!
How and Who to ask for letters of recommendation
Choose at least 2 teachers who know you well. If you have not stood out in some way, the teacher may have a hard time writing a good recommendation.
People to consider asking for letters of recommendation:
Teacher, Counselor, Coach, Club Advisor, Religious Leader, Employer, Community Leader, or someone who has supervised your community service. Note: Family members are NOT appropriate recommendation letter writers.
Ask within 3-4 weeks of when you need the letter of recommendation (if you don’t have a deadline, before Thanksgiving will suffice).
Compose an email to each recommender individually asking them to write you a Letter of Recommendation OR you may ask them in person. *If it’s an email, CC: or BCC: yourself
Share a copy of your Naviance Brag Sheet with each individual with whom you have requested a letter of recommendation.
