“Once a KalumFam, Always a KalumFam!”
School is where we make friendships that last a lifetime or temporarily. With different cultures and practices we learned to be diverse. Moreover, School is where the learnings and experiences happen, this is also one where some children are terrified and lazy to go to. From anxious to bittersweet, why so?
The first step after entering the Kalumpang branch, I was anxious, worried, and nervous, just like any other first day of school, or like walking up to the counter of a fast food chain to order a meal or simply request a packet of ketchup. Communication is undeniably quite difficult, same goes to socializing. Afraid of what people think of you or who you will trust, thoughts run through your mind saying “is he/she trustworthy,” or “am I oversharing?”. We are always adjusting ourselves for the benefits of others or just to fit in; for us to make new friends. As we continuously change how we dress, talk, and walk, we are starting to become a new version of ourselves that we didn’t notice take into effect over time. Changes come with advantages and disadvantages, apart from that, sometimes changes are the way to open a path to lead for the better. “Your life doesn’t get better by chance. It gets better by change” - Jim Rohn, as he says so.
The more steps and the more we move forward, life gives us a ton of surprises. Like what happened when I started to continue moving forward to the path, I discovered that sometimes school is not about learning but about having fun while learning just like the “FUNWEEK” event of APEC Schools - Kalumpang that happens annually. It’s where all students from the branch will be divided into groups to compete in intense sports matches, ranging from board games, ball games, to e-games, for a chance at victory! There are also events such as: “Teacher’s Day” where APEC Kalumpang shows appreciation for the hardworking teachers that still continue for children to learn and prepare about the real world. We ask them questions, when we don’t understand or simply do not know about the topic. Teachers are like sculptors, which teaches a deeper knowledge for children to develop on different topics, and they are becoming ‘more refined’. The ideas in their minds start ‘taking shape’ , this sounds a lot like the work of a sculptor. Then, “Literary Appreciation Day” and “Science and Math Day'' appreciation for Science, Math, and English that helps us over the years about how to solve problems about finance, our body system, and if we need to address something we can use the learnings in english to compose grammatically correct sentences. Furthermore, even in our culture “Araw ng Wika” and “UN Celebration” celebrate different nationalities and to be familiar to each one of them.
As we continue our steps on the staircase, we explore many things than we thought. Many first thought that school is just about projects and homeworks. But, what we don’t notice is that school is one of the most important and exciting part of our journey to become a better person someday. Every milestone and event; they let us learn and have fun at the same time, like “PUNOng Puso Entrepreneurship”, this event is for a cause and for a better environment. We were tasked to create a booth to sell, and the profit that we will get will be divided for the class and for the cause. Sounds like a hassle and hard to accomplish, but we didn’t notice that this event helps us in business, how to manage, and what strategies we could apply to sell more. Through these events, we created not only learnings but memories. The memory of laughter and celebration when we have our first sale, the memory of a class asking each other if they need help, and a class that applies teamwork to accomplish the museum (part of United Nation Day. Students needed to create a museum based on their chosen country about their famous celebrities, foods, places, and more…) they are assigned to do. It’s mesmerizing seeing as we continue walking and thinking what happened in the past years of being a student. it is very touching and hard to let go.
Kalumpang Branch is one of the areas that I was previously terrified and worried to come into. But tonight, I realize that I don’t want to leave this place anymore nor do Iwant this place to go away. It holds so many memories and it feels blue and grey not seeing the hallway not yellow anymore and you can’t hear students laughing and chatting. “Everything ends” they usually say but for our memory, Kalumpang Branch will not end until it’s memory stays in history. Vive La Branche de Kalumpang! Thank you for the memories you let us have and it’s sad that we won’t see you anymore at the corner of that street.

We live in a world that’s a bit too fast-paced and often unpredictable. From economic pressures, social standards, these elements shape our emotional and psychological wellbeing in significant ways.
As we age, our mental health is significantly influenced by our past experiences, which leave lasting impressions on our thoughts and moods. These memories, whether positive or negative, are triggered by recurring patterns or circumstances in the present.
Someone who has previously been rejected, for instance, could feel depressed, anxious, or insecure if they come across circumstances that mimic that rejection. These responses are heightened by unresolved emotions from the past and are not merely related to the present circumstances. We may experience a never-ending cycle of chronic stress, anxiety, or depression as a result of unresolved issues and past traumas influencing our mental health.
Holding onto positive memories too tightly can lead to unrealistic expectations, discontent, and feelings of inadequacy or disappointment. This can result in worry, anger, or grief, as it may seem like a shield against unpleasant events.
By addressing and healing emotions, letting go of past experiences helps improve mental health. Emotions can be effectively processed when they are accepted for what they are and acknowledged without bias. Giving up weakens the hold that previous experiences have over our mental health. Remaining mindful allows you to notice your thoughts and feelings without getting carried away. Being kind and understanding to oneself, particularly while coping with unpleasant memories or feelings, is a key component of self-compassion.
Mental health is a journey filled with challenges and ups and downs, but it's okay to have bad days. It's important to keep moving forward, even if it's just one small step at a time. Reaching out to friends, talking to therapists, or taking a breath can help. Healing takes time, but every small step brings you closer to peace and wholeness. Together, we can weather the storms and bask in the sunshine.
So hold on, my friend. Keep breathing, keep reaching out, keep believing in yourself. It’s okay. It will be alright.

APEC Schools Kalumpang is not just about to let their last school year pass without exciting surprises. Students and Facilitators thoroughly prepared for their annual and last Fun Week event held from February 19th to 23rd and brought the event from APEC Schools Kalumpang's site to the town hall, multi-purpose court, and Marikina Sports Center in pursuit of a break from long academic tasks while expressing students' talents and spirit with fun, competitive activities.
In light of the event, students were divided into four teams inspired by the four Chinese mythical creatures; the Azure Dragons, Vermillion Birds, Silver Tigers, and Black Tortoises.

(Day 1)
The week started by showing spirit in their respective teams, creating banners, practicing yells, and distributing Fun Week shirts as the school's fundraiser. Faculty, student council members, and the Amplify actively planned the guidance and flow of the event wearing their Fun Week polo shirts. They paraded from the site to the town hall, showing off their creative banners with the teams' muses and escorts. Students expressed excitement by exchanging witty banters with competitors and forming a loud crowd. Miss Lin Batiancila led the ceremony, gracefully gave her opening remarks, and the dance club performed their cheer dance with dashes of hip-hop to welcome each team and the following days ahead.
(Day 2)
On the second day of the Fun Week, students headed down the multi-purpose court wearing their shirts with props, ready to cheer on their team's basketball players who spent the first few hours practicing their dribbles and shoots. The Faculty prepared their scoreboards while the utility members operated as referees. The basketball game consisted of 4 rounds, starting with Black Tortoises against Vermillion Birds, Silver Tigers against Azure Dragons, Silver Tigers against Black Tortoises, and Vermillion Birds against Azure Dragons for the championship round. Injuries were inevitable during the game, but the players never failed to show their sportsmanship and determination in helping one another to complete the game fair and square. Students consistently showed support, while some players from other teams even volunteered to sub for the injured players. The game concluded as students celebrated the Azure Dragons' victory.
“I can see that students and players are enjoying and it’s quite intense. They are doing their best and yan… as you can see… they are raising concerns,” said former Learning Facilitator, Sir Joshua Vallejo when asked about his experience during the basketball match.

Meanwhile, some students headed to Marikina Sports Center as the badminton tournament was about to start. The badminton game consisted of four rounds with two sets dictating a race to 21 points each. Black Tortoises fought against Azure Dragons, Silver Tigers against Vermillion Birds, Black Tortoises against Vermillion Birds, and Azure Dragons against Silver Tigers for the championship round. Some players failed to attend the match on time, but other students were always ready to keep the game going. The day concluded as players from the Silver Tigers, Bea Tabangin and Jakub Yabot, celebrated their team's victory.
(Day 3)
From the ever-growling Silver Tigers to the ever-soaring Vermilion Birds, the fire-breathing Azure Dragons to the slow but steady Black Tortoise, the entire school was unified in their pursuit of victory when day 3 arose. The friendly rivalries that emerged during Fun Week only served to strengthen the bonds between students, inspiring them to perform their best and support one another.
On Feb 21, 2024, the main event of the volleyball championship match was highly anticipated. The fierce battle began with the clash between the Black Tortoises and the Silver Tigers was nothing short of intense. From the first whistle, both teams were determined to secure their place in the championship match. The first half of the game tested the Black Tortoise’s resilience as the ever-growling Silver Tigers took an early lead. The first quarter ended with a score of 18-25 in favor of the Silver Tigers, and their dominance continued in the second quarter, outscoring the Black Tortoise with a score of 17-25.
In the second game, the Azure Dragons and the Vermilion Birds played against each other. It was a closely contested match that went into multiple sets. Silver tigers had to wait for the results of this match to learn who they'd be playing against in the finals. The results quickly became evident, with the Azure Dragons losing the first set, 12-25 and the Vermilion Birds emerging victorious in the second set, 25-22. The third and final set was also won by the Vermilion Birds, 15-9.
The Black Tortoise team ended the game losing against the fire-breathing Azure Dragons, and as a result, they came in second place. The game was swiftly concluded with the final score at 25-12 in the first and 25-13 in the second set in favor of the Azure Dragons.
Lastly, the match between the Vermilion Birds and the Silver Tigers had taken place. It was a heated and lengthy game. At the end of the first set the Silver Tigers got a win of 21-25. The Vermilion Birds won the second set with 25-16, pulled even, further extending the match to a third set. The last set was pretty spicy and the Silver Tigers became the eventual champs with the final score of 15-17.
(Day 4)
The recent Mobile Legends tournament on the fourth day of the Fun week: The Bang Bang (MLBB) tourney was a display of the high skill levels, competitiveness, and passion of the players and their supporters. The event took place at a local place, and all the players and spectators met there to see the fight.
The tournament began with all MLBB players congregating in Room 203. Meanwhile, the audience were gathering in the other two venues; Room 201 and 302. Throughout the tournament, participants and spectators alike immersed themselves in the games, exchanging taunts and friendly trash talks. The room reverberated with the passionate voices of supporters, adding an extra layer of intensity to the battles. Each victory was met with boisterous celebrations, fueling the competitive spirit and pushing the teams to give their all.
The tournament, which started at 9 am, and has gone on until late afternoon, defying even the wildest expectations regarding its length. The contestants and the witnesses initially expected to finish the event early, supposedly by noon. In spite of that, it was a real pleasure to listen to the breathtaking moments and a nail-biting series that kept everyone at the edge of their seats until the very end.
The teams submitted the names of their members and then the games started. Against the Azure Dragons, the very first match saw the team of theirs losing 0-2 due to the lack of synergy within the team. Nevertheless, the Azure Dragons bounced back from that loss in the next encounter against the Silver Tigers, winning 2-1. During the break, there was a leader switchover; one team member took over after speaking loudly for so long. Though they ended up losing the final game with a score of 2-1 and the great sense of accomplishment they gained from the match was like a prize itself.
In the finals, the Azure and Vermilion teams came to face each other in a spectacular display of red and blue fire. This fight between these two equally strong enemies was as intoxicating as it was explosive. Alongside the victories, each team was involved in several lively verbal exchanges, and the stadium became more animated. In which case, both sides demonstrate their exceptional skills and show determination in order to secure victory for their own teams.
After all, Azure Dragon won first prize, leaving the Vermilion team for the place of the second best. Tension intensified dramatically as the teams swapped one-upmanship through the game making a statement for anyone who attended.
In addition to MLBB, MLTeams continued to work in Room 204, while the supporters occupied the Room 202. Finally, Room 203 served as the location for the chess competition showcasing a colorful variety of gaming entertainment for the contestants and supporters.
The MLBB tournament followed a round-robin format, with teams accumulating match wins to advance to the grand finals. The two teams with the highest number of victories secured their spots in the ultimate battle, while the teams with the fewest wins contended for third place. In a remarkable showcase of skill, the Azure Dragon emerged victorious in the grand finals, defeating the Vermilion Birds. However, the match for third place did not occur due to the Silver Tigers' lack of match wins. As a result, the Black Tortoise, with a single match victory, claimed the third-place position by default.
The MLBB tournament depicted the feeling of devotion, rivalry, and mutual trust that characterize competitive gaming. It connected players, supporters, and fans; thus the emotional atmosphere of the games is unequaled and unsurpassed.
During the chess competition, players gathered in Room 203 where they utilized their time by pairing one player from each team to play against each other. In the first round, players from Vermillion Birds and Silver Tigers scored but players from Azure Dragons and Black Tortoises got back during the second round. The game's thrill escalated when Azure Dragons and Vermillion Birds' players moved on to the championship round. The chess tournament ended with praises to players and the game champion from Vermillion Birds.
(Day 5)
More exciting surprises are made on the last day of Fun Week when students and facilitators gather around the site for a competition game of sequence before the closing ceremony. As they walked to the town hall for the awarding ending ceremony, everyone had prepared for their performances and students were ready to support their team in the event. The principal, Mr. Zoilo Reyes, gave his passionate remarks fueling the enthusiasm surrounding the Fun Week. The crowd went alive as they presented the muses and escorts from each team confidently showing off their unique sports attire representing tennis, racing, and baseball. Representatives delivered their spirited introductions with short speeches while audiences cheered showcasing their support for their team. In the final competition of the event, the Priestess and Warrior competition crowned Elisha Zozobrado and Loeric John Sangalang from the Silver Tigers.
A new band formed by the students, The Cotton Band, gave their heartwarming performance with OPM songs followed by the Indak Indayog dance club and the LFs' surprise dance performances that made everyone's day even better. After the cool performances, they also celebrated the outstanding achievements of each team's Most Valuable Players with certificates, medals, and trophies. Special awards were also given to students for the determination they showed throughout the whole event. Attendees anticipated the announcement of the overall champion presented to the Vermillion Birds for their recurring victory and team spirit knowing that each team were winners.
“I don’t say we lost but we gained experience,” expressed Orlando Aragon from the Black Tortoise.
Their celebration continued with never-ending picture-taking, and as everyone was not ready to end the week, LFs extended an invitation for a karaoke bonding session back on the site. They made sure that the memories and bonds created during Fun Week would be cherished for years to come even if this was the last time APEC Schools Kalumpang stands.

Anxiety is often seen as a sign of weakness or lack of character. So, we dismiss it until it explodes like a shaken bottle of Coke, spilling on everything we've worked on, like your presentation and every relationship you built. Until all that’s left to do is apologize for who we are.
No one likes feeling lonely (craving human contact while feeling unwanted), but when you're constantly dealing with anxiety, it's just something you get used to. Some may prefer to be alone rather than to feel anxious, like a burden, or judged by anyone, but it causes physical symptoms affecting our daily lives, performances, and health. Dealing with anxiety becomes very challenging, though a fire can always be extinguished and every rainbow comes after it rains.
From presenting in front of the whole class to writing an article for the school newspaper, anxiety comes in regardless of who and where we are. Psychologists reveal how millions of people struggle with anxiety, making it the most common mental health issue people face and often overlooked.
It's pervasive to feel anxious, but it isn't just about feeling nervous and worried. The reality of living with anxiety is far more dreadful than it may seem, especially when it takes a toll on our everyday lives. It becomes associated with other mental health issues like depression and insomnia. You may constantly feel aching and tensed, from your head to your stomach and to every muscle. Or maybe it's time to sleep, but each conversation or decision you've made crawls into your mind in the form of doubt, keeping you awake and uneasy. You worry about whether you have done the right things, said things better while presenting, or struggled to maintain control because of your relentless overthinking and second-guessing.
Someone I knew with anxiety ran away, hid behind bathroom walls, and apologized for feeling like a burden. Saw them shaking with reddish eyes that had just cried, and their wishes to be alone at home or buried. All I heard when I asked if they were okay was, "No, I'm sorry." "I'm sorry I froze up on the stage." "I'm sorry I ruined the day." "I got too anxious. I'm sorry."
The truth about anxiety is that it is not curable, though it should not be apologized for. It is a part of our lives that proves that we're here— alive and living. And it’s beautiful.
Despite the negativity it brings us, anxiety is also the moment before finding out we got accepted to our dream job or University. It is also confessing to the person you've fallen for and finding out they'd been waiting for you. It is also trying out a rollercoaster for the first time. It is also about taking risks and doing things you aren't used to. Anxiety allows us to feel ecstatic and relieved in those moments we call "special."
Another thing about being anxious is that it reminds us of things our body needs. It reminds us to focus on the things we can control. Sometimes, we feel anxiety when we need enough sleep or water. We may need to meditate, talk to a professional or a friend, or exercise. Whatever it may be, acknowledging this emotion helps us understand ourselves better.
Without judgment or a stigmatized view, we can break this barrier we call anxiety. This involves cultivating mindfulness and self-compassion so that people can let themselves experience anxious thoughts and feelings without contending back at them. Just like a gardener with his plants, people's mindsets grow with kindness and patience through self-care like breathing exercises, meditations, and building healthy lifestyle habits. Additionally, we break this barrier by accepting support and guidance from trusted family, friends, or health professionals.
Once we start to see anxiety as a natural part of our lives, it becomes our source of acceptance and growth. We can allow ourselves to find strength in vulnerability instead of seeing it as a flaw or a weakness.
If you struggle with anxiety, I hope you find comfort in the fact that you are not alone. Maybe you overthink about others judging you. But in those moments we exist, no one notices us more than we do ourselves. And maybe the ones who notice are the ones dealing with it as well.

To my amazing friends whom I consider my brothers and sisters who taught me how to love and made me realize I can be loved.
“I love you” 3 words and 8 Letters. What do these 3 words and 8 Letters mean to you? Love is one of the most vital feelings a person can have. It’s often associated with romantic feelings, but we forget how love isn't just romance, it’s also in friendship. Love is the act of caring and giving to someone else, having someone’s best interests, and well-being in mind because to truly love is a selfless act. However, everybody sees love differently, and most of us view it romantically. However, I see love in my friends, the type of love that will stay with me forever.
Being a friend means experiencing what it’s like to know every single detail about a specific person as if it's some sort of an academic subject.

When it comes to the friends that we’ve built relationships with, we’re like the woman who knows exactly what her husband will order on the menu. Just like how I know my friends, I know that Liz's favorite color is purple, not violet. Juls prefers Kitten heels rather than Mary Jane heels. Ash creates a group chat every year on how we will surprise all our friends on their birthday, even if we don’t have any more money, and Jaja spends a month reading one book.
I know what it is like to seek and enjoy every moment of discovery with a person. I’m sure everyone has a friend like Kovan, who is a joyful person but is never afraid to correct you if you make an offensive joke. A friend like Fel who acts tough, but whom we know deep down is very soft-hearted. A friend like Isha who spends hours scrolling through Pinterest to find a perfect outfit, a friend like Bam who creates witty jokes that we can’t understand but are willing to explain, and someone like Shasha with whom you practically have the same interests. A friend like Janrey who normally doesn’t tell us he loves us but we can feel it in the way he takes care of us, a friend like Jaycy whom you never taught you would be close with, and a friend like Chlo, whom we always fight with them but we always come back home to each other. This is what it feels like to know someone with all your heart. These are the things that I think all friendships have experienced together, and I think an essential part of every friendship is how there become fights and arguments within each other.
When you truly love someone, it can hurt. Loving someone is not all sunshine and rainbows; it also has rain. Fighting with each other is a normal thing in a friendship because many individuals have different needs, opinions, values, and desires, no matter how close they are. It means you are comfortable with that person to correct their mistakes or misunderstandings, even though it may hurt. If both of you are willing to fix the problem, both of you come out of the storm better than ever.
Just like when I go to a sleepover with my friends, after we settle into a fight with each other regarding stupid and small topics or opinions. Even after we fight, we still go home to one another. When I woke up that morning, the sun leaked into my bedroom and poured onto my mattress; I had never felt safer. And it wasn’t the four walls around me or the roof over my head that made me feel safe; it was the home I created with the people I love, the sense I was finally in responsible and loving arms after years of being alone. Love was there in my empty bed with the piles of chips that Juls bought for us to eat but we never did. It was there in the Peppa Pig coloring book that we painted in and in the pictures I hung in my room that gave me a reason to keep going when I couldn’t. It was in the note that I received on my birthdays, the one I would fold up and keep in the shoebox I kept with all the other notes I have received from them before. I woke up safe in my home and glided into a new place, laying in a bed full of love.
Remembering that sleepover made me realize that everything I know about love is through my long-term relationships with my friends. Particularly the ones whom I have spent years and built a home with. When you feel undesirable, when it seems like the whole world is falling apart beneath your feet. You probably don’t know it but you’ve been loved your whole life. It might not be when a guy kisses you, but when your friends hug you. This kind of love may not kiss you while dancing in the rain or arranging white gowns, but it will listen to you whenever necessary.
It will lay your head on their shoulders whenever you are watching a movie, to cry over Coco together with no awkward silence. You can be silent for hours. However, their presence is enough, to read your favorite books and talk about them to each other, eat together, travel the world together, rewatch your favorite TV series together, and prepare surprises for each other 's birthdays no matter how many times you have done it. To play basketball together, to try out the new coffee shop near your school together, to stay at each other’s home after class, to try baking together and fail miserably, to sing as loudly as you can, and dance to your favorite artists without a care in the world. To tell each other about their problems and be there no matter how much they cry.
This kind of love will stay with you until your hair turns gray. You have so much to gain and learn with this kind of love. You can treasure this love with you until your last breath and keep it as close to your heart as possible.

Students from different school clubs at APEC Schools Kalumpang displayed a deeper personal understanding of extracurriculars after they had their fifth official club meeting. Despite having to deal with numerous challenges, they were able to actively develop as individuals and as a team by participating in extracurriculars.
People often view school club activities as mere additions to the academic journey — boosters for college applications or a pastime. Some view extracurricular activities as time-consuming, believing they can better utilize the time for academics or self-care. The role of school clubs in improving ourselves often goes unnoticed. As I interviewed students from different clubs through Google Chats, their answers made me realize that participating in diverse school club experiences is not just an option; it's a practical and impactful road to personal growth (in its best form!).
"It was so hectic at first since it was a transition back to face-to-face classes, and I was quite awkward, still. I didn't know many people, I was mostly disorganized, and I was doubting myself the moment I joined. But, over time, through the days, the problems, and through laughs, I thanked myself for never thinking twice about joining those organizations. It filled me with so much joy seeing students smile and brag on social media about how happy they are with the school—it made me want to be even better. I was genuinely happy.," said Sofia Hidalgo, the Kalumpang branch student council Vice President.
The interviewees from different organizations have some things in common. (1) They share a passion or great interest in the activities their club offers, (2) had doubts about joining but ended up not regretting their decision, and (3) have shown improvement in different areas of their personal life.
Whether it's the student council initiatives and leadership, the creative pursuits in writing, photography, multimedia, and gaming, the strategic and physical challenges in sports like badminton and volleyball, or the artistic expressions in music and dancing, these students make an effort to participate in activities that resonate with their passions. This shared enthusiasm builds a fun, comforting community within each club, boosting a sense of purpose and belonging. "My friends and I have loved playing volleyball ever since. From my experience, the club is really enjoyable because it's thrilling to play with your closest friends and supportive members.," said Michaela Ronquillo from the volleyball team.
Even though they realize that being part of a club brings struggles and challenges, these students were able to not only overcome their doubts and challenges but also found themselves more interested in the activities of their chosen clubs. And as time progressed, their doubts became a deep sense of personal achievement. By the end of the second quarter and the 5th official club meeting, each club had already successfully planned and participated in various activities and found a natural passion that went beyond their expectations. Amplify's Managing Editor, Carl Morte, stated, "I didn't want to join Amplify at first, nor did I have any interest in it. But I decided to join anyway to see if I wouldn't be disappointed in the long run. It didn't! I'm having a blast helping to organize events related to Amplify as well as being able to write for the school to publish." He also reflected that Amplify forced him to bring his writing skills to the test. This led him to develop his writing skills and start taking it as a hobby.
The most compelling similarity among each club is the improvement in various aspects of their personal lives. As they engage with their organizations, they find themselves stepping out of their comfort zones, becoming more adept at problem-solving, and creating meaningful connections. All clubs have shown development in their leadership, collaboration, and critical thinking skills, which are crucial for their personal development. "I was able to grow and exercise my abilities. I was able to make decisions, learn from my mistakes, and have humility. I was able to meet people outside of my organization, and even the branch. I get to be loud, and I get to see people celebrate my wins and be there for my losses.," added Sofia.

In the quiet spaces between our heartbeats where silent battles scream and echo and where our emotions paint the canvas of life, there exists a binding thread of shared struggle. This is coming from anxious thoughts screaming to be let go of.
When asked the question "Are you okay?” we often hear the response “I am fine,” often scared of judgment and vulnerability. In this generation, we are more open, and talking about emotions and being emotionally vulnerable is now widely accepted, but there are still many stigmas associated with it. That's why most people would hide it by putting on a happy face for others, the feeling of pressure to appear cheerful, make other people laugh, and maintain a constant smile during the day. the pain in your heart amidst the laughter that fills the air throughout the day, the screaming pain just sitting there in silence, waiting for the day it will finally be heard.
Being there for everyone while you are sitting there drowning in your thoughts, questioning your very existence, and staying up all night with no one but you to comfort yourself.
Depression and anxiety are the most common mental health problems. Our emotions are our foundation. When we fail to express our emotions, it might cause us problems. Remember that you are not too sensitive, you are not overreacting, and your feelings are valid. It is okay for us to get hurt; although, unlike physical wounds, our emotional wounds are not obvious, they are often avoided and hidden rather than healed. If we don't fix a problem, it becomes persistent and turns into a pattern of behavior—a cycle we find ourselves stuck in like a never-ending puzzle. Seeing these wounds is the first step, and it’s not an easy step to take.
One of the words that has been stuck in my mind lately is “Etterath” from the dictionary of obscure sorrows. It refers to the feeling of emptiness and loss of direction after a long process is finally over—that feeling of joy after accomplishing a goal you've been working towards for years but missing the stress that organized your life into a mission, anxious to know which hill your heart will lead you to climb next.
A lot of people suffer from depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, and other types of mental health problems. Every one of us has a different way of handling emotions. It's this thing called “Coping Mechanism,” which acts as our escape and takes us away from all the pain we hold. Journaling, for instance, lifts the weight off of someone's mind, a therapeutic haven where emotions find expression. Hitting the gym, letting all the pain turn into fuel to keep us moving forward as if the weight of the world were on our shoulders. These kinds of acts can ease our minds and make us feel better. Building these kinds of habits can help us move forward and not let our thoughts get to us. Talking to a well-trusted friend can also help us in trying to let our feelings go. But It is still recommended to seek medical assistance like a therapist, stop being too hard on yourself and allow your emotions to build up. Do not hold on to what you feel because it will only fuel the chaos you already feel. It is okay to ask for help. if you are still uncomfortable talking about your feelings to other people. You can try having a conversation with yourself, talking to yourself is an important part of self-expression and understanding your feelings. It may sound weird but it is completely normal don't be afraid to have a full-blown conversation with yourself, it is okay and can be beneficial.
Life is nature's gift, and every gift should be treasured and appreciated, no matter how big it is. I remember this quote I stumbled upon while sitting on a random bench on a Saturday night looking at the 3 a.m. stars. It goes something like, “Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift." By appreciating the little things in life, either good or bad, and considering the other things as extra, we'll realize how much happier we'll be. Finding purpose is like finding the missing piece of the puzzle; it's the piece that fills in the void in our existence, a masterpiece we should all cherish.
Raising awareness reduces the stigma and discrimination associated with mental health, but it's so much more than that. We've learned that mental health is a crucial part of our lives, and it's essential to not let external factors ruin it. Even if things are overwhelming, just look at your statistics; you've survived 100% of your worst days.
Developing a greater understanding of mental illness can allow people like you to recognize those in your life who may be dealing with anxiety, depression, or other conditions that are affecting their mental well-being, so please check on your friends and loved ones' mental health. Mental health should always be acknowledged. Talking about your feelings doesn't make you less of a person. Our mental health impacts how we think and act, so it is essential to take care of it.
With all that said, I have a really important question to ask...
Are you okay?

I've come to the realization that teachers are artists who paint the canvas of our future. Like what Albert Einstein said, "It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.”
Like the common adage goes, teachers are our second parents, and the school is our second home. Admittedly, I take that saying lightly, as it doesn't really seem interesting until I look deep into it. Each teacher differs from the others in redundant ways, according to their individual traits. They are the compass that activates the magnet of curiosity and wisdom in their pupils. Isn’t that what makes them a hero? The fact that they establish the foundation for knowledge and have an impact on our future that extends far beyond the classroom makes it clear that they are the essential people who will determine how our future is shaped. And for that, they merit praise for igniting the light of grasp to help us build the person we will become.
This school year marks the continuity of the usual online modality of education since the COVID-19 pandemic struck the world. As we adjust to the transition from online learning to blended learning modality, the Student Council and Amplify members wasted no time and opportunity to give our Learning Facilitators (LFs) the commendation they deserve. Both school organizations asked for the cooperation of class officers along with their classmates to make this celebration successful. The preparation for the program required three weeks in order to give each class enough time to plan and practice the acts and surprises they will present to our LFs. The program was held at Room 301 and 302. Additionally, Monobloc, who recently took the crown in the NTC-APEC Battle of the Bands competition, performed so that everyone could enjoy the celebration even more! It was delightful to see the Learning Facilitators and students joining in and singing along to the music.
The Amplify Team was given the assignment of aiding and assisting the Student Council with the preparations days prior to the program. I observed what LFs actually do aside from the class discussion and guiding us as we do our Experience Modules (EMs). As they face their laptops for many hours, they read their lesson plans, check emails and schedules, and look through the students' outputs.
These tasks alone are already hectic and tiring. Most importantly, they are lifelong learners who willingly dedicate their time to refresh their knowledge, learn new skills, and are exposed to new ideas to be able to mentor their pupils.

Aside from the face-to-face surprise that occurred, what makes this school year's Teachers' Day celebration extra special for me as a student is the fact that I figured that while teachers aren't the usual heroes we see on the big screen, they are the people who demonstrate unwavering commitment to their morals, no matter the obstacle, for our own benefit, just like what heroes do. Hence, our LFs are the unsung heroes with the hidden capes.

The APEC Students from Kalumpang traveled all the way to National Teachers College to witness the excellence and competitiveness of the competition. The entire NTC Quadrangle was alive with anticipation, an electrifying atmosphere was developed as two formidable teams geared up for a battle that would become a memorable experience for everyone. It wasn't just a sporting event: it was a passionate and intense showdown between Tanglaw and Warriors, an unforgettable competition etched into the school's sports history.
Before the match began, both teams warmed up with an air of excitement and determination. The entire Quadrangle was filled with fans eagerly waiting for the thrilling contest that was about to unfold. The passion in the players eyes was undeniable, the fire, the dedication that had brought them to this moment.
On the volleyball court, as the first service went over the net, Tanglaw struck first taking the first blood giving them the advantage and quickly asserted their dominance, racing ahead with a strong lead. The APEC Pink Warriors were stunned but that wasn’t enough to make them surrender. They showcased unwavering resilience against their formidable foes. Despite the odds stacked against them, the Warriors displayed unyielding determination to hold their ground.
The intensity of the game continued to rise as both teams fought fiercely. The scores began to even out, creating an even more intense atmosphere that had the crowd on the edge of their seats. As the game reached its climax, NTC Tanglaw delivered the final blow, securing the victory. The court bore witness to an intense battle that left everyone in awe of the players' determination and sportsmanship.
On the basketball court, the tension was no less palpable. Players from both sides went through rigorous warm-ups, ready to engage in a fierce battle. The looks in their eyes while warming up show their determination and their hopes into winning this match. The initial first half of the basketball game was a whirlwind of action. Crucial plays and moments unfolded in just minutes after the game started.

The Warriors showed their remarkable determination in keeping the score close. The back-and-forth exchanges between the teams had spectators holding their breath, unsure who was going to come out on top. As the game advanced, NTC extended their lead, showing the determination to secure the win. The Warriors performed really well fighting valiantly but NTC's second half performance sealed the deal.
This intense showdown between both schools (NTC-APEC) left a mark on everyone who witnessed it. The players' dedication, passion, and hard work were truly inspirational. The memories it created, and the bonds of the players would be truly remarkable for both teams. The game we witnessed wasn't just a game; it was an epic tale of hearth, teamwork, and the love of sports.

A scenario so instantly spine-crawling to those who unfortunately experience this. It literally feels like the world starts crumbling. You slam your door open as you hurry to visit the person behind the message. In most cases, it’s a friend. Waves of emotions run through your mind at light speed, memories flood around your head, and the tears represent the overflowing pain coming out as you sprint to your friend’s house, hoping to find that they were only joking. As you arrive, you find out it was too late.
“Thank you for everything” is a phrase stereotyped to be the last words of a suicidal person online. It’s popularly portrayed to be an emergency situation that one shouldn’t take as a joke and should immediately visit that person.
Suicide is a life-or-death scenario and a heavy topic. It’s a silent epidemic that destroys thousands of lives each year in a domino effect. It targets the people in pain so that it can add more to the weight they carry. Suicide doesn’t just show itself personally.
It hides around the mind of a person and controls their decisions through the voices they echo within their souls, claiming their life once it orders the deadly decision of suicide. Isn’t it already terrifying that it can kill so silently and so much in quantity?
What makes it much more difficult is the fact that it is hidden. The people behind those messages hide the pain and suffering they experience through the smiles and laughter they bring when in front of their friends. Their minds are in a gloomy forest filled with a dense fog as darkness voids all hope to be found. It’s way too deep for surgery or medication to eliminate this darkness and “cure” someone who is suicidal. Medication may relieve, but the pain and suffering still remains. The only way to enlighten the darkness of a suicidal person is by shedding light in their minds.
Suicide Prevention or Mental Health Awareness month is a theme occurring on September annually. It aims to raise awareness of mental health topics related to suicide and to prevent it. “Creating Hope Through Action” was the theme launched for this year’s suicide prevention month with a goal to get everyone to take action on preventing suicide. This sheds light on the obscure topic of suicide and lets everyone be aware of the horrors of this silent epidemic that affects the many people who suffer in silence. Rather than keeping it silent, suicide prevention month makes noise to combat suicide.
I can remember a person who was once almost a victim of suicide. I could see the hopelessness in their eyes and the pain they hid behind the laughter and smiles as they went on with our conversations. However, what I can vividly remember as I was terrified were the scars of the cuts they had made on their arms. The horrible reality of hopelessness where in every corner you look for at least a glimmer of hope is not present and is consumed by the darkness of the mind.
This was because of the feeling of being alone in a world full of hardships and adversities. The battles they face are difficult as they try to fight monsters of pain, emotion, and suffering. No one truly understood these battles and what they may be going through when they seek help from the people around them. They found no hope in the people they would beg to be with them, listen to them, and comfort them, but no one responded to their plea.
Scenarios like these are tragic and the solutions are never simple. However, Isn’t fighting a battle with friends better than fighting alone? A little comfort and company is essentially the support one needs in any adversities they face. Simple actions matter to the people who truly need the comforting messages of their friends. You can check up on a friend to see if they’re okay, or maybe call them or visit them from time to time to give a bit of advice.
Company from someone provides hope and support as it gives someone something to hold on while they continue their journeys carrying the weight of life. It doesn’t matter what type of company we’re talking about whether it is a friend, peer, or family member, as long as everyone has each other. No one deserves to be lost in a forest of darkness only to find themselves fighting battles alone. Everyone helps each other out one way or another.
And while no one may truly understand the tragedies one goes through while completing their race, at least there are people cheering for you knowing that “You are not alone!”
This is why it is so important to be aware of topics like suicide to help in the action of preventing it. Us people, already full of hope brought by the positives of living a full life, should share this hope by lighting up the world through action. One big shine of light covering the entire world as we rise to spread the words of hope around the globe.
If you are one of the people being described in this article, remember this: “You are not alone.” Behind you are your friends and family to support the long journey that you still have. Along this journey are experiences and lessons worth living for a short amount of time. Life is short, don’t actually make it shorter as they say it online. Instead, make it long by experiencing the things you won’t ever forget once we reach the finish line of our race.

For us seniors, this academic year is a defining step in our life. The long anticipated college application and entrance tests are set to commence around November 2023-January 2024. The added pressure of having to refresh four years worth of lessons, and going through one test booklet after another, while keeping your grades up can be overwhelming. Others may find that their usual time management and studying methods are ineffective, especially for those aiming/striving for awards and acceptance letters to every university on their roster. Recalibrating yourself and adjusting to the academic demand this year is essential for the best productivity. In this article, I’ve gathered the sentiments of an APEC Schools student and an APEC graduate for a look at their firsthand experiences…
Evaluating which learning methods are most effective for you is the first thing on the list when creating a review schedule in preparation for the CATs. Visual learners can opt for graphs and flash cards when going through previous lessons. Getting to know yourself and how you effectively digest information is vital for effective self-learning.
An 11th Grade student shared that: “I don't plan on going to a review center any time soon because they're expensive, instead I plan to search for free PDFs that discuss the topics covered on entrance exams and employ studying techniques that will help me prepare for it.”
This is a good alternative for those who may not afford review centers especially if you prefer self-studying and are more efficient and effective when you’re learning at your own pace.
Now that it has been mentioned, we should note that review centers are also a viable option for those preparing for CATs. Reviewing by yourself can be quite an obstacle, especially with stacking school deadlines. Enrolling in a review center or tutorial center will help you manage your schedule and learn effectively.
So you’ve been accepted to a university of your choosing, how exactly do you prepare?
I’ve gathered the sentiments of APEC Schools Kalumpang Amplify’s previous Editor-in-Chief, Ms. Fabienn Ayelet Frago, for insight on how she prepared for her freshman year.
When my mind was already set on which university to attend, I immediately started to familiarize myself with their culture and environment as much (as) I can…. I even went as far as checking out the establishments nearby and assessed whether I would have to dorm or not, and what mode of transportation I will have to take.
We must take into consideration the everyday living expenses at the university to better prepare. Having an idea on your possible daily routines can help you have a stable schedule and visualizing your life for the next few years by familiarizing yourself to the environment you’ll be in can help you navigate your way through the university.
Understand how many units are required for each course/subject and plot a schedule for yourself—having a calendar/tracker has saved me so many times!
Mastering time management and learning to cater to your learning styles will help in getting you through your college years, it will allow for a balance between your academic and social life leading to a fulfilling college experience . Moreover, disciplining yourself and aiming for independence in terms of academia will help you prepare and strive for your career.
College is a big, new step for us all. It can be scary leaving the comforts of high school behind; new friends, new experiences, and a new environment are to shape your character as we come of age.
As we embark on this new adventure, we should remember that it's okay to be scared, for fear often accompanies the most significant and transformative experiences.
This chapter in our lives is a canvas waiting to be painted with colors of determination, pliability, and curiosity. As we come of age, with each challenge and triumph, we will forge our paths to our future, and become the architects of our destinies.
