Celebrating Words on Literary Day

A few days into the second quarter, APEC Schools Bacoor announced the much-anticipated Speech Choir Competition, held as part of this year’s Literary Day on November 29, 2024. With the theme "Voice of the Nation: Rights, Conviction, and Nation Building," students were tasked with crafting a 20-line poem that embodied this powerful theme. Representatives from each section performed their compositions before a panel of judges, beginning a competitive yet inspiring journey.

The elimination round on November 19 showcased the talents of every section. Judges tirelessly evaluated performances from morning until afternoon to determine the finalists who would advance to the grand finals. Ultimately, three sections—one from junior high, one from Grade 11, and one from Grade 12—secured their spots. The stage was set for the highly anticipated Literary Day celebration, featuring the grand finals and exciting events designed to honor the power of words and creativity.

Speech Choir: A Stage for Passion and Expression
The day began at 8:00 a.m., with the finalists pouring their hearts into their final performances. Their voices reverberated with conviction, capturing the essence of the theme, "Voice of the Nation: Rights, Conviction, and Nation Building." Each performance showcased the students’ creativity, passion, and ability to convey meaningful messages through poetry.

By 11:00 a.m., the long-awaited awarding ceremony began, marking the culmination of weeks of effort and dedication. The champions were announced as follows:

Junior High Champion: Grade 8-Service-1
Grade 11 Champion: 11-ABM-1
Grade 12 Champion: 12-ABM-1
Overall Champion: 11-ABM-1

The victorious 11-ABM-1 stood out for their outstanding recital, delivering a performance that resonated deeply with the audience and judges alike. Events like the Speech Choir Competition empower students to use their voices meaningfully, celebrating the transformative power of language and performance.

Cinema Fest: Stories on the Big Screen
While the Speech Choir Finals energized the morning, the Cinema Fest opened its doors at 9:00 a.m., offering a cinematic journey through stories adapted from literature. The darkened room became a haven for movie enthusiasts, featuring Life of Pi, Beauty and the Beast, and Narnia screenings. These films highlighted the seamless connection between written and visual storytelling, inspiring students to appreciate how literature can transcend mediums to evoke wonder and awe.

Live Museum: Fiction Comes to Life
The excitement carried into the afternoon with the Live Museum, which began at 1:00 p.m. Students transformed into iconic characters with impressive costumes and performances, bringing fictional worlds to life. The event started with character introductions, where cosplayers confidently presented their personas. This was followed by a talent portion, where students showcased their ability to embody their characters through acting, dialogue, or skits.

The host, Sir Merrofel Paculan, added a lively touch, engaging the audience with humor, games, and interactive moments. The runway portion stole the show as cosplayers strutted to music, embodying their characters with flair and confidence. The audience’s cheers created an electrifying atmosphere, culminating in an awarding ceremony that honored the day’s most creative participants:

Best in Portrayal: Jei Nyza Xyvney Austria as Red Riding Hood (Grade 11-STEM-1)
Best in Costume: Von Allen Pilapil as Deadpool (Grade 11-STEM-3)
Most Unique: Aliana Scarlly Mae Lucero as Hiroto Goto (Grade 11-STEM-2)
Most Creative: Cean Marco Cabbo as Medusa (Grade 9-Excellence-1)

The Live Museum showcased the students’ ability to merge imagination and artistry, offering an unforgettable experience for participants and spectators.

Literary Booths: Interactive Fun with Words
Literary booths added a layer of interactive fun throughout the day. Opening at 9:00 a.m., these booths featured engaging activities such as word unscrambling, guessing games, note dedications, and book readings. Designed to celebrate reading and writing inclusively and enjoyably, the booths invited students of all interests to participate. By the end of the day, the booths had fostered a deeper appreciation for literature while creating a vibrant and welcoming space for everyone.

Literary Day 2024 was more than just a celebration of events; it was a tribute to the power of words and creativity. Through performances, films, cosplay, and interactive activities, students were reminded that literature transcends its role as an art form. It is a tool for expression, a vehicle for change, and a means of connecting with the world and its diverse stories. As the day ended, it left a lasting impression on all who participated, inspiring them to continue using their voices to make an impact.
