KEYNOTE

Herbert Chen, MD, FACS

Dr. Herbert Chen obtained his BS from Stanford University with Honors and with Distinction in 1988 and graduated from Duke University School of Medicine Alpha Omega Alpha in 1992. Dr. Chen then completed a general surgery residency followed by a surgical oncology and endocrinology fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Chen is Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), and the Surgeon-in-Chief of UAB Hospital and Health System. He is a Professor of Surgery and Biomedical Engineering, and holds the Fay Fletcher Kerner Endowed Chair. His clinical interests include endocrine surgery and he is a pioneer in radioguided parathyroid surgery. Dr. Chen’s lab has been continuously funded for over 21 years and studies the role of Notch signaling in thyroid and neuroendocrine cancers. He is the American Cancer Society MEN2 Thyroid Cancer Professor. Dr. Chen is the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Surgery, serves on many other editorial boards. He has held several leadership positions in major academic societies including President of the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons Foundation, President of Association for Academic Surgery, President of the Society of Clinical Surgery, President of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, and President of Surgical Biology Club II. Dr. Chen has mentored over 125 faculty, post-doctoral fellows, residents, medical students, and undergraduates in his lab. He has published over 570 original research and review articles and has edited 28 textbooks. He has been recognized for his passion for teaching and mentoring the next generation of surgical leaders. Dr. Chen has also be recognized as a champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Dr. Chen and his wife Harriet, a freelance photographer, reside in Mountain Brook, AL. His son Alex is a medical student at Yale University while his daughter Liz is a graduate student in Graphic Design at NC State.


SPEAKERS

Linton Yee, MD

As Associate Dean for Admissions, Dr. Yee provides administrative oversight for the medical student admissions process and works to develop new initiatives to improve admissions strategies and initiatives. He works closely with the Assistant Dean of Admissions and Admissions Committee members to ensure a fair, unbiased, and inclusive admissions process. Dr. Yee is responsible for assuring ongoing compliance with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) standards and elements related to admissions as well as maintaining relationships with local, regional and national pre-med organizations, participating in student recruitment activities, and assisting with pipeline program development.

Dr. Yee is an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Emergency Medicine. He was the interim co-associate dean of admissions in 2017 and had been the vice chair and chair of the School of Medicine’s Admission Committee prior to that. In addition, he was the clinical course director for the Body and Disease class in the School of Medicine from 2009 to 2019. He is also the Asian Pacific American Student Association (APAMSA) faculty advisor and leader of the student faculty show band.

Dr. Yee graduated from the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine and did his residency in pediatrics at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Before joining Duke in 2007, he worked at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu, Hawaii, at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, California, and at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, California.


James Nguyen, MD

Dr. James Nguyen is currently an interventional cardiologist practicing in Bradenton, Florida. He graduated from St. George’s University School of Medicine in 2006. He then completed his internal medicine residency at Orlando Regional Medical Center, cardiology fellowship at the University of Arizona, and interventional cardiology fellowship at the University of Texas, San Antonio.

Dr. Nguyen has publications in multiple peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Interventional Cardiology, Echocardiology, and Circulation and published book chapters in Endovascular Intervention and Practical Handbook of Interventional Cardiology. He has won the Florida and National American College of Physicians research competition on his work with cardiac CT imaging and is an international speaker to Vietnam, China, and Turkey. Dr. Nguyen serves as the chair of the Chest Pain Medical Committee at Manatee Memorial Hospital, chair of the Payer Relations Committee to the Florida American College of Cardiology, and chair of the Manatee County Healthcare Advisory Board. Outside of medicine, Dr. Nguyen plays paintball and watches college sports.


Cathy Eng, MD

Cathy Eng, MD, FACP, FASCO, Professor of Medicine, Hematology and Oncology, is the David H. Johnson Endowed Chair of Surgical and Medical Oncology, Co-Director of GI Oncology and the Co-Leader of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Research Program, Director of the new Young Adults Cancers Program, and the Chair, Developmental Research Program for the GI SPORE, at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. She has served on the Scientific Review Committee and remains on the Clinical Trials Shared Resource Oversite Committee. She is a highly sought mentor and serves on the Vanderbilt-Ingram Mentorship Council, mentor on the T-32 grant, and serves as a Professional Development Mentor. She continues to assume leadership positions devoted to clinical research. She has focused on the development of phase I-III clinical trials using novel therapeutics for biomarker discovery and enhanced drug utilization in colorectal, appendiceal and anal cancer patients.


Nationally, Dr. Eng has also been highly active serving on ASCO, ECOG, and SWOG. She has served on multiple committees for ASCO including the Career Development Committee, Education Committee for Colorectal Cancer; ASCO Scientific Program Committee Track Leader for the Gastrointestinal Cancer-Colorectal/Liver Track and served on the Steering Committee 2012-2015. She is the former Chairman of the Scientific Program Committee of the ASCO Gastrointestinal Cancer Symposium from 2012-2013 and Chairman, Steering Committee, GI Cancers Symposium 2016. She was chosen for the ASCO Leadership Development Program and served on the ASCO Government Relations Committee; worked with the ASCO Cancer Prevention Committee on the consensus statement regarding HPV vaccination; served on the ASCO Nausea and Vomiting Guidelines Committee, ASCO Taxonomy Task Force, ASCO Social Media Committee, and is currently on the ASCO Colorectal Guidelines Committee, ASCO Scientific Program Committee (Colorectal Cancer Track) and the ASCO Communications Committee. She was the co-chair of the SWOG Rectal/Anal Cancer Subcommittee and was the Vice-Chair for the SWOG GI Committee. She was the Chairman of the NCI Rectal/Anal Task Force (two terms), served on the NCI GI Steering Committee, and is now the co-Chair of the NCI GI Steering Committee.

She has published in many peer reviewed journals including Journal of Clinical Oncology, Lancet Oncology, Nature Review, JNCI, Annals of Oncology, Cancer, and Annals of Surgical Oncology. She has previously received an NCI grant “Administrative Supplements to the institutional CCSG grant to Support Biomarker Studies Associated with NCI-supported Clinical Trials of Immunotherapy”. She was a co-PI for the MD Anderson Moonshot for HPV-Associated Malignancies (Section Lead for the Rare Cancers subsection) and continues to serve as a grant reviewer on the MD Anderson Colorectal Cancer Moonshot Grant and the Sabine award. She has served as a consultant to the FDA and AHRQ, Cancer Research UK: Training & Career Development Board - Clinician Scientist Fellowship, the Italian Association for Cancer Research, the Dutch Digestive Foundation, the Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) - Farrah Fawcett Foundation Joint Scientific Advisory Committee (JSAC) and the SWOG Impact Award. She currently serves on the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, T-32 Internal Advisory Council.
