This class will have a fee as we will take a trip to the University of Utah and watch their Wind Ensemble rehearse.

Step into the spotlight — behind the scenes! In this class, students will explore the magic of Broadway by watching and analyzing a variety of Broadway-style musicals, gaining a deeper appreciation for storytelling through music, dance, and stage production.


In addition, students will get hands-on experience with theater design by helping to paint and prepare set pieces for our school’s **spring musical, Oliver! **. From creative expression to practical stagecraft, this course combines the excitement of Broadway with the teamwork of live performance.

Ye Olde Calligraphy - American Handwriting through the Ages **American Symposium Class

Mr. Skinner

Description:

Does your handwriting suck? Do you want people to "Oo" and "Ah" when they see your notes? In this class, we will look at such documents as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, as well as such authors as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The class will involve learning to read traditional cursive styles and learning to imitate them, leading up to a final project where you either copy an important American document or make your own ancient-looking document. No ukuleles allowed! Just kidding! For the Guitar Class, You'll learn chords and strum patterns - rock, pop. All levels of ability are welcome, whether you've never played or have some experience. We will be ensemble songs and reviewing the fundamentals of playing together as a Rock Band ***Students must bring their instruments from home; a capo and electronic tuner are required.

Students will explore the vibrant energy of Reggaetón while learning how to perform, choreograph, and create their own dance videos inspired by popular social media trends. Throughout this Winterim, students will build skills in choreography, group formations, and the basics of video production — planning, filming, and editing their own short dance videos.


By the end of the course, students will present a live reggaetón/TikTok mash-up performance and premiere their group video projects at the Winterim Showcase Assembly.

Time to put on your thinking caps as we explore some of the poetry and short stories of the master, Edgar Allan Poe. Most people believe he wrote only scary and dark literature, but you will be amazed by the beauty and depth and other emotions he spoke about as we paint the setting of "The Cask of Amontillado," write a mini-mystery using techniques of the "Tell-Tale Heart," write poetry based on the learning from Annabel Lee, create board games about following your dreams by analyzing "Eldorado," make a collage and write descriptive words on what really happened in "The Raven," and participate in a unique choral rendition on "The Bells." In this class, students will have exclusive access to various movie scripts, including films that were produced and even some that were never made. We will not only read scripts, but learn about the process of producing a film, from writing to directing to acting and all the various jobs you can one day pursue if you want to work in show business. Everyday we will have a different lesson about movies, filmmaking, as well as the American history of Hollywood and the entertainment industry.

Reading Appreciation teaches ways for students to access, understand and talk about books. Students will select a book to read from our library to check out during Winterim.


A portion of the class will be dedicated to reading their selected book. The other portion of the class will be used to discuss literary themes and techniques used by the author. Each week, students will be required to present a report to their class about their findings within their book.


Requirements for entry: Before Winter Break, students must choose a book from the approved list.

This class is meant to teach appropriate coping strategies for combating stress, anxiety, and all the things that make life just a little bit harder. We will also learn about living a healthy lifestyle in both body and mind. The primary focus of this course is self-care. Every day we will do one meditation, one physical activity (i.e. yoga, massage, pilates, etc.), and one session of lecture/note-taking on an important aspect of self-care. This class is relaxing, fun, and will give you skills that you can use for the rest of your life.

The Journey to the 2026 World Cup

Description:


Experience the excitement of the world's most popular sport. This course is for all skill levels and delves into the history, rules, and strategies of the World Cup. We'll explore the new format for the 2026 tournament, hosted right here in North America. Each week, we'll cap off our learning with a friendly soccer tournament to put our knowledge into practice. By the final whistle, you will be prepared to follow the World Cup with a deeper understanding of the game.

A fun and laid-back class where you can unwind and discover the power of yoga and meditation. Great for any experience level with yoga flows and easy-to-follow guided meditations that’ll help you relieve stress, boost your focus, and find your inner calm. By the end, you'll have the skills to incorporate mindfulness into your everyday life. Come as you are, and let’s chill together while we stretch, breathe, and grow!

American Flag Football Skill Building and Live Sport Competition **American Symposium Class

Description:

This course is a deep dive into the sport of American Flag Football. Students will develop fundamental skills required to succeed in the sport. Students will participate in drill - like settings, while building skills and knowledge of the sport. Students will participate in live tactical games of American flag football. Students will cooperate on a team and compete with other teams in the sport. If you are interested in learning about and competing in the sport of American Flag Football come join this Winterim class.

Olympic Sports at the Utah Olympic Oval **American Symposium Class 

Mrs. Patterson and Mrs. Mazars

Description:

Step onto the ice where champions are made! In this course, students will train at the Utah Olympic Oval — home of world records and Olympic history. Students will get hands-on experience (from some former olympic athletes!) in a variety of ice sports, including figure skating, hockey, speed skating, and hopefully even a taste of curling.This class offers the chance to explore multiple Olympic disciplines while building balance, strength, and confidence. Come skate and discover your new favorite sport on the same ice as Olympians!

Learn how to train to get stronger, faster, more explosive, etc. In addition to proper lifting technique we will discuss how to organize a training program so you can continue to progress after the class concludes. We will also discuss the history of strength sports and strength and conditioning in the United States. .

Let’s dive in. This course will be focusing on fishing and the impact it has had in shaping the world we live in today. Through a mix of hands on and research based studies we will look into subjects such as species, habitat both local and around the world, behavior, predation, conservation, ecosystems, history, rules and regulations, hands on activities such as making flies, casting and tying knots. Our goal is to discover what an invaluable resource fish are and get you excited to learn more and maybe one day go catch your dream fish.
