Broadway Singing and Auditioning
Mrs. Thompson Fee: $5
Learn proper singing technique for the musical theatre style of singing. Learn skills to have a strong audition -- whether for a choir/ensemble or Broadway show.
In class we will: warm up, work on proper tone and support for musical theater, select and learn a 16-bar audition piece, discuss and practice aspects of a strong audition, and perform solo audition for class And we’ll learn a Broadway medley as a group and perform at Winterim assembly.
Roller Skate like a Boss!

We’ll be heading over to Classic Fun Center in Sandy for a rolling good time. Skate rental included, or you can bring your own skates/inline skates. We’ll receive professional instruction, play games, and have free skate time.
American Music History: A Melting Pot of Melody

We’ll explore the history of a variety of musical cultures here in the US from Spirituals and Native American music to Jazz and Broadway. Listening to a lot of great music, we’ll learn about how music is such a staple of our societies and how this melting pot of backgrounds mixes up some pretty unique and exciting music that could never have existed had our country not been founded.
Regional American Cuisine

An American Symposium Class
From sea to shining sea, America’s regional cuisine is as diverse as its people! We will be learning the signature flavors of America including the South, New England, Midwest, Southwest, and more. This class will be a blend of history of how regional American foods came to be and cooking dishes from the regions we learn about. Bring your appetite for knowledge and an empty stomach!

Disney Theme Park Treats Extravaganza

If you’ve ever been to Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure Park you know that part of the Disney experience is indulging in the tasty treats throughout the parks. In this class we will recreate some iconic foods that will have you feeling like you are back in the Happiest Place on Earth. Be prepared to make churros, monte cristo sandwiches, beignets, dole whips and more! Bring your appetite and be ready for some Disney trivia throughout our journey through Mickey’s yummiest bites. Barbarians

So, barbarians…. Crazy people swinging an axe in just a loincloth, right? Well, kind of. This class will explore the non-Roman cultures of Europe during the late empire and early medieval periods. Celts, Germanic tribes, and Vikings each had unique, vibrant, and beautiful cultures and mythologies which still affect us today. Come learn why the Romans were so afraid of the Celts, what happens to Thor at the end of the world, the secrets of Viking ships and more!
Meditation and Stress Management

Do you find yourself stressed and needing to relax? Join us for a playful but informative class that dives into the fundamentals of stress management and self-care. You will learn the science of stress and how to control it with meditation, physical activities, healthier habits, relaxing hobbies, aromatherapy, and more! Find the answers to a happier, healthier, and more relaxed you.
Knit Yourself A New Favorite Beanie

Knitting is a skill that dates back to between 500 and 1200 AD in Egypt and is still prolific today. Many think knitting is just for little old ladies in recliners, but that isn't so! Knitting is a skill for everyone, young and old. There are limitless things you can do with knitting needles and the knit and purl stitch, including making cool beanies, sweaters, scarves, blankets, and so much more. Learn the basic stitches of knitting and you will get to create your own stylish beanie to keep you warm and cozy. Costs include a set of circular knitting needles that will be yours to keep, yarn and other basic knitting supplies needed to complete a beanie from start to finish.

Intro to Felting

What do Genghis Khan, fleeing Christian monks, French royalty, North American explorers, mad-hatters, and poodle-skirt girls have in common? Felt! Explore history through the lens of one of the world’s oldest textiles while learning the art of felting. Learn how to needle prick and wet shape wool to create jewelry, textile paintings, and felt animals.
(Cost covers take home materials including: needles, finger guards, foam pads, agitating surface, and wool).
Museum Quest

Stars! Dinosaurs! Jellyfish! Insects! Birds! The world is filled with fascinating things and luckily people have collected and curated them for us. Spend winterim exploring multiple local museums and conservatories. On days we don't have field trips, interact with fossils, bones, preserved specimens, and taxidermy wildlife in the classroom with material on loan from other museums. Top this all off with stunning film of the natural world and you'll have a class unlike any you have had before!
(Class will be on a field trip to a different museum every other day. A Permission slip is required for this class).
The Evolution of Fairy Tales

Singing mice and glass slippers, curses broken with true love's kiss? Is this your idea of a fairy tale? How about cutting off toes to fit in a slipper or carrying around a dead girl in a box for fun? Some fairy tales started off a bit more gruesome and less magical, but over time they have been changed again and again. Imagine Cinderella as a cyborg, who has to save the Prince from a vicious alien queen or a girl who can spin the sun, moon and stars into dresses to fight a genie. Come learn the many ways fairy tales have changed with the passage of time and through the lease of new cultures.
Boys in the Boat - An American Underdog Story

An American Symposium Class
They were underdogs - nine young men with a boat and some grit. That is all they had. Against a mountain of opposition, they defeated all the elite rowing teams of America and won their way to the 1936 Olympics in Germany. There they had to face even harsher challenges. With Herculean determination and courage, their grit turned to gold.
Students will read the young adult version of Daniel Brown's book The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and their Epic Quest for Gold in the 1936 Olympics. In addition to the book material, students will learn about rowing in American universities, the effects of the Great Depression in America, and America’s participation in the 1936 Olympics.
Physics of Flight
Mr. Hollinger Fee: $10
This class will focus on the physics and engineering associated with flight. Students will learn about the forces acting on planes, but primarily this is about building gliders and a rubber-band powered plane from balsa wood. With trial and error, you will try and solve the same problems that aircraft engineers struggle with everyday--how to increase thrust and lift, while decreasing weight and drag. The class will be competing for the same prize--who can keep their plane in the air the longest. Perhaps you can beat Mr. Hollinger’s record of 11.3 seconds with his plane.
Norse Mythology

The Norsemen were the most fearsome invaders of their age, and the gods they worshiped were every bit as epic and intense as they were. Join us as we explore the rock stars of mythology, from wise, one-eyed Odin to tricky shapeshifter Loki, to the manly but not so bright Thor and everyone in between. We’ll also meet elves, dwarves, monsters galore, and every other strange and amazing creature the Norsemen dreamed up. Marvel fans, take note: We’ll also be comparing the authentic Norse myths with Marvel’s re-envisioning of Thor and his friends.
Egyptian Mythology

Soak in the eerie and mysterious world of mummies, curses, and pyramids as we explore Ancient Egypt in all its glorious strangeness. Half-animal, half-human gods? We’ve got that. Temples filled with crocodiles and giant snake monsters that eat souls? We’ve got that too. Come and see why Egyptian myths are some of the wildest and most unique in the world.
Gold Rush!

An American Symposium Class
Gold Rush! will explore the history of the California Gold Rush, culminating in a choose your own adventure-style game similar to Dungeons and Dragons but set in the Wild West. As we learn about the thrills, risks, and hardships the original forty-niners experienced, we'll also create and play original characters that will need to survive and thrive in a D&D-like campaign set in a fictional California boomtown.
Golf

Learn history, rules and actual play of golf. We will be going to Impact golf (12101 S Factory Outlet Dr #105, Draper, UT) during session one and session two. There will be instruction provided by PGA professionals and Mrs. Gow. Class sizes will be limited to 12 students per session. You must provide your own clubs. We will meet each morning at Impact Golf, Transportation will be provided from Impact Golf to school ONLY.
Keyboarding & Internet Skills

Learn to type at lightning speed, without looking at your hands! Become an expert at importing graphics into reports and projects! This course will teach you how to type by touch, with speed and accuracy, enabling you to type reports and papers quickly. It will also come in handy when you are using the internet or chatting online. In this course, you will also learn how to find, import, and save useful information and graphics from the internet. Additionally, you will learn the easiest ways to add pictures from the internet to your assignments, along with the rules and procedures for giving credit to internet sources. Spend Winterim with Mrs. Woodcox, refining your internet skills and learning the secrets to mad keyboard speed!
Chess

This class is designed to teach you the rules, play and tournament play of chess. We will focus on how to play as well as strategic moves such as castling, en passant and scholar’s mate.We will also have a tournament in the last week with the top four teams competing in a 4 way chess game

Come and explore the spooky stories and poems of Edgar Allan Poe. We will read and listen to such stories as The Tell Tale Heart, The Pit and the Pendulum and poems such as The Raven.
After learning the history of Poe and his thoughts, we will create our own spooky stories.
We will edit and record the stories, just as Edgar Allan Poe would have wanted. Come and show your writing and voice talent.
Rock Climbing: The art of the send Fee: Momentum Membership
Mr. Swensen & Ms. McDade
Instruct students on basic safety and skills of rock climbing. Basic procedures and courtesies of climbing in a gym. Proper technique of working a belay device, including all commands and calls, how to develop clear communication between climber and belayer. Teach students how to tie and check for all the knots involved. Instruct students on how to climb efficiently, by learning about balance and proper technique as well as how to identify different types of holds. Introduce students to bouldering, learn how to properly spot someone who is bouldering. This class will be held at Momentum Climbing located in Sandy at 220 West 10600 South. You must be able to provide transportation to and from the gym for yourself/student, APA WILL NOT be providing any.
Advanced Rock Climbing Fee: Momentum Membership

We are happy to announce a new section of rock climbing this year available to 10 students in grades 9-12. This class will run for periods 2 & 3. We recommend students getting a membership with Momentum Climbing Gym rather than pay the $120 class fee. Ideally students should have their own harness, shoes, and belay device. We will be taking all the skills you have learned in previous years and applying and developing them further specifically to Lead, Climb Cracks, and learn Traditional rock climbing methods. Bouldering fanatics need not apply. Please see Mr. Swensen or Mr. Sheneman if this is something you are interested in, and have the transportation and means to take this class.
Bowling

Learn rules such as etiquette, choice of ball, throwing the ball. Also learn proper stance and position of your body in bowling. Students will also learn how to score a bowling game on paper.

Intro to Japanese Language & Culture

Learn the basics of the Japanese language by doing some reading, writing, and speaking. Also learn about the people and culture of Japan. By the end of Winterim, you will have the tools to hold a short conversation in Japanese, read hiragana and katakana, and you will have a better understanding of the perspectives and values of the Japanese people. 楽しましょう!
Card & Dice Games

A deck of cards or a few pairs of dice are all a group needs to have a good time around a bright campfire. Not to mention that these gaming tools are recognized worldwide. Come learn a different card or dice game everyday, including Camps, Scum, Liar, Crazy Eights, Wizard, Five Crowns, Euchre, Poker, Yahtzee, and more! Part of the fun is learning about strategy and bluffing. Come develop the confidence and skill to come out each game a winner. At the end of Winterim, students will take home their very own deck of cards to share the fun with their family.
Hawaii, the 50th State

Embark on a serious journey through Hawaii's history and learn about Hawaii’s development as the 50th state. We review some of Hawaii’s history for context but then focus on events surrounding Hawaii’s statehood in 1959, and the period after to the current day. Learn about the distinct challenges that Hawaii faces as an island state, including the environmental and cultural challenges, what Hawaii contributes to the Union, and about Hawaii’s unique identity.
Heist: The Most Famous Bank Robberies in History

In this class, you will learn about the most famous bank heists recorded in history. You will hear the stories of the world’s most famous bank robbers, the ones who got caught, and the ones who got away. Throughout this class, we will also explore questions such as: What is the largest heist in history? What tactics did they use? What challenges did they have to overcome? Surviving Worst Case Scenarios

Learn how to survive some of the world's worst case scenario situations! From shark attacks to evading drones to landing a plane if the pilot passes out. In this course, you will learn about and discuss how to survive many different worst-case scenario situations as well as read firsthand accounts of people who have survived these worst-case scenarios. American Pop Culture and Trends of the 20th Century

This class will also analyze the decades in terms of political and social movements that played a key role in the pop culture of the time.
Ancient Greek History and Culture

Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates? We’re gonna talk about them, and a whole lot more. In this class we’ll explore the land of Ancient Greece from the earliest days of civilization all the way until Rome’s conquest of the region. This means we’ll talk about their founding myths, their greatest military victories and failures, and some of their great works of literature. If you have ever wanted to know about the real story behind the 300 Spartans or about the adventures of Alexander the Great, this is the class for you.
History of American Science Fiction

Human beings have always looked towards the future. Science Fiction is one of the ways that we can get a glimpse into what the future holds. For generations, Americans have tried to predict the possible futures that lie ahead of us. Some have been eerily accurate, others wildly incorrect. In this class, we will look at how Americans have used this genre to address the concerns of their own time and to make predictions about the future. We will look at some of the greatest works of American science fiction (both in literature and film) and analyze how science fiction has reflected and shaped American culture.
Hercules Through the Ages

Hercules, the Superman of Greek Mythology, is one of the most famous and popular heroes of all time. As such, his stories have been told over and over again throughout the last 3000 years. In this class we’ll be learning the mythology surrounding this great hero, and we’ll also be looking at how his story has been changed and used over the years. We’ll look at what the ancient authors wrote, and then we’ll analyze modern films and plays that adapt those stories for new audiences and cultures.
Weight Lifting

In this class we will go over the proper techniques of weight lifting. Bench press, squat, deadlift, overhead press and many more lifts to learn. Not only will there be lifting but there will be ab workouts as well as cardio. If you want a good workout, join this class.

Ahoy, Mateys! We all know the tales of Captain Hook and Jack Sparrow, but how much do you know about real pirates? Take a journey with me on the high seas and investigate the golden age of piracy. The course will examine the historical role that pirates played in shaping the America’s before the USA was a major naval power. We will compare these historical accounts of piracy to how the boisterous buccaneers are often portrayed in popular culture. We will also delve into questions such as: Why did people decide to enter into piracy? What demise did some of the most famous pirates face? and was it common for pirates to bury their treasure?
LEGO Build Off

This class will start with each student receiving the same LEGO kit to ensure that the playing field is equal. Each day there will be a completely unique challenge where you will compete against other students in the class to win a prize and claim that you are the LEGO master.

Wild, Wild West

Join me as we travel back in time to the Wild, Wild West, a land of cowboys, miners, pioneers, and Native Americans. Uncover the truths behind the myths and discover the places where some of our most famous legends got their start. In the mid-1800s, masses of people began migrating west in the United States. They were searching for new lands, adventure, gold, silver, and religious freedom. These early travelers helped shape the ethos of the American culture we share today. This class will teach students about the history of the American West and the Oregon Trail, in particular and will participate in a daily simulation of the Oregon Trail..
Murder, Mayhem, and Mock(ery)

Have you ever wondered if you could be one of those TV lawyers who always seems to “win” their big case right at the end of the day? This course will introduce you to some of the basics of what it takes to prepare a trial and provide you the opportunity to present your case to a jury of your peers. We will work on a trial from evidence and issue spotting, opening statements, cross-examinations, to closing arguments. And, of course, you will learn some of the rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution to all of us; regardless of whether or not you have been charged with a crime.

Do you love rock and roll music? Come on a journey with me through the decades to learn about the artists that have defined this genre and the social and historical circumstances that shaped their music. We’ll start with the origins of rock and roll in 1950’s America, then continue with the most influential bands and artists like Chuck Berry, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Little Richard, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, The Beach Boys, CCR, The Eagles, Queen, Fleetwood Mac, The Clash, U2, The Cure, AC/DC, Nirvana, No Doubt, Radiohead, The Foo Fighters and so many more. We’ll listen to lots of songs and watch performances from the greatest names in rock and roll history and hopefully introduce you to some new favorite songs and artists along the way!
Amigurumi (Japanese Crochet stuffed animals)

Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting stuffed animals. Students will learn basic crochet skills in order to create their own stuffed animal that they can take home. Students will also have the opportunity to learn to read patterns so they can attempt more advanced techniques during the course to make a wide variety of cute and fun stuffed animals!. Many amigurumi students have continued using their skills long after they have finished the class. This class is for beginners as well as experienced students who are interested in improving their amigurumi skills.
Amazing Ocean Animals: An Introduction to Marine Biology

Have you heard of the dumbo octopus, a species of cephalopod that resembles the beloved cartoon elephant Dumbo? Or what about the epaulette shark that can walk outside the water? In this class students will learn about the world's oceans and many of the amazing animals that inhabit them, from tiny plankton to the great blue whale. We will watch videos to see these animals in action and also take a field trip to the Living Planet Aquarium where you will get a chance to see some of the animals we have learned about in person.

This class will dive into the history of women in the United States from the time of the Native Americans in the pre-colonial era to present. We will explore how women’s roles, status, image, and legal rights evolved due to social and economic change and as a result of these women.
Making the Bull Moose: The Life and Times of Theodore Roosevelt

We’ll be learning how to create games, animated cartoons (featuring your own drawings if you’d like!), music videos, and other fun things!

We’ll also be experiencing playground games like Four Square, Jacks, and others! So come have some fun with us!
Zumba 101

It’s fast! It’s fun! It's dance exercise to fun world beats! Zumba is an exercise system that has been around for over a decade and is a great way to get your body moving as part of a healthy lifestyle. Don’t take this class unless you like to boogie-oogie-oogie! Learn the basic steps of the Zumba fitness system and how to design a dance workout that is effective, fun, and addictive. Let’s rock!
Volleyball for the Non-Beginner

Come and learn some advanced skills for volleyball. This course is for you if you already have a basic understanding of how to play the game. We will be working on different approaches to the game (specialized roles, setting techniques, etc….) to become more complete players.

Stop Motion animation is a fun and challenging art that brings inanimate objects to life in fun, exciting and playful ways. Come learn about this amazing art and how these films are made. We will be learning many techniques and have the opportunity to put together several short animations/films. Learn the art of photography necessary to make these films and some of the technical skills to put them together into enjoyable films. Camera required (phone camera’s acceptable as long as you have a way to transfer photos via a cable).
Custom Rags: The art of screen printing

Screen printing is an ancient art that was popularized by an American industrialist in the 1960’s. Now it pretty much dominates the clothing industry. Imagine going to a store and only seeing plain t-shirts with no designs. Come learn about this art and the methods used to do it...Oh, did I mention you are going to create your own ‘custom rags’ (that’s slang for custom clothing) during the course. That’s right you get to create your own designs and actually print them onto articles of clothing, maybe a custom shirt to wear around town in your favorite color, a bandana or towel, an apron to get your groove on in the kitchen, the possibilities are endless. This is a skill you can use and apply long after winterim has ended.

When you hear the words American Motorcycle most of us automatically think of Harley Davidson as the definitive ideal. But Harley was late to the game when it came to being the First American Motorcycle brand, that honor actually belongs to Indian. Come learn about motorcycles and this definitive brand which has actually done more to define the modern motorcycle and motorcycle heritage than HD(Harley-Davidson). We will learn all about the start and art of racing on 2 wheels, become familiar with motorcycle heritage and these incredible machines and see why and how Indian motorcycles have risen, fallen and are once more on the rise.
Wilderness Survival

In this course you will learn the basics of surviving in the wilderness through proper planning and emergency skills. You will learn what to pack and what to carry in the wilderness. You will also learn how to deal with inclement weather, how to plan for a disaster, and how to recognize signs of trouble. We will practice survival skills which will include finding food, water, and shelter as well as some health concerns you may run into if you are in the wilderness. We will also practice how to properly pack a backpack and what to and what not to bring into the wilderness.
Comic Book Creation

Learn how to script and illustrate comic books like the pros! You will learn about the Joseph Campbell formula for storytelling (The Hero’s Journey), comic book industry standards, and tips and tricks for getting your reader hooked on your book. We will discuss effective critique, storytelling methods, character archetypes, and design techniques to create a compelling story and comic book cover.

Imagine if you will... a class where imagination unlocks the key to another dimension. A dimension of sight, sound, and mind. One in which current events are presented in the form of alien invasions, ghost stories, and other twisted tales of unimaginable circumstances. We will watch, analyze and compare the ideas found in the original Twilight Zone series (1959-1964) with the events of the time involving America (Vietnam War, Space Race, Civil Rights, etc.). It is a class which we call... the Twilight Zone.
2D and 3D Pixel Art with Beads

Pixel art, as a form of creating a bigger picture out of small details, was born in the 1970s, when computers and digital art started to gain relevance and, as you can guess, it is based on pixels. For those familiar with the term, but unfamiliar with its graphic characteristics, a pixel is like a cell in a living organism - it is the most basic structural unit of an image. Design your own pattern, pixel by pixel, and bring them to life! Come join us making 2D and 3D pixel art using Perler Beads.

Do you want to gain confidence and be a more persuasive speaker? Do you already love to debate? Are you a current member of the debate team? Then this class is for you. Veteran debate team members will be allowed to research, practice, and build their cases. New debate team members and non debate team members will learn the forms of speech and debate, logical fallacies, and ethics. We will explore a variety of topics together ranging from silly topics like “is cereal soup?” to more serious topics like “should all plastic packaging be banned?” This class will culminate in an in-class debate tournament..
Salsa Ensemble

The Salsa Ensemble will study and perform the music of Juan Luis Guerra and Ruben Blades. Students will gain experience in performing traditional salsa as well as folk rhythms from Cuba and Puerto Rico.

Be taught by a real FBI agent! Mr. Kim is one of our parents and has been in the FBI for 20 years. He has been in many positions in the agency and will tell stories and outline federal criminal cases in the US. You will learn how the FBI operates as well as strategies and techniques used by a real FBI agent! Be prepared to learn, this is not a sit and listen class. There will be assignments and research.

Sports Conditioning is a sports-inspired cardio workout class for building strength and stamina. This high-energy class will combine athletic aerobic movements with strength and stabilization exercises. This class is for anyone from the weekend athlete to the hard-core competitor. Astronomy

Our universe is complex and grand, yet little time is spent thinking about what occurs outside of our little blue planet. In this class we will explore our galaxy and review what previous civilizations thought about what lies beyond. At the same time we will consider the possibility of extraterrestrials, apocalyptic scenarios, and the unique position of the Earth in space. Then, we will end it all with a visit to the Clark Planetarium.
College Readiness

As a student at APA you have likely heard your parents and teachers encourage you to attend college after high school. Although this is great, the path to college can be confusing and stressful. For example, you may not know the difference between an associates degree and bachelor's degree, community college and university, or scholarships and loans. You may be worried about trying to pick a subject to study or how to pay for it. These are the types of questions we will discuss. After it all, we will finish the class with you preparing mock applications for college and scholarships.
An Introduction to the Holocaust

The holocaust is one of the darkest points of human history that is still frequently denied throughout the world. But what exactly is the holocaust, how did it happen, and was it an original idea? We will explore these important questions and consider how to prevent such an atrocity from happening ever again. As we weave through such complexities, we will read Night, a memoir by Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel, in which he recounts his experience as a prisoner in the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps. The $12.00 fee is used to purchase the book.
Ballroom Dance Team

American Ghost Stories

American Ghost Stories is a class that investigates the rich American tradition and culture of telling folk-tales that center around the”spooky.” Ghost stories are international and come from every region, but America in particular has many that are based largely in history and tell us much of what happened in the past and how people interpreted their community. Together, we will learn about this history and literally get the chance to walk into it as well with a possible field trip to a “ghost” site right here in Utah.
Native American Jewelry

Learn to weave, design and bring your own jewelry ideas to life in the same style that Native Americans do in their traditional art form. Along with learning and appropriately using the history of Native American jewelry making, we will also have projects to take home. We will be creating bracelets, belt and other jewelry designs and presenting them to the class and will have a mini “trading post” in which you and your classmates will exchange the goods you create on your own.
Scratch Art

Remember those “scratch” art sheets you used to play with as a kid where you rub away the top black layer to reveal rainbow foil underneath? Guess what, adults use them too! Even professional artists have been known to create intricate and dynamic pieces of “scratch art” and have brought it to a new level in their work. Discuss the value of “value” in the art world and create a piece of your very own in this class.

Write a Book 101

Yep, I know it’s another writing class… but if you’re a cool nerd like me who dreams of things like how the Grand Canyon came to be (hint: maybe heartbreak caused it), or time travel being possible if one were to break terminal velocity, then Room 116 is your scene. Bring your story ideas, and let’s turn them into publishable works! Oh, and we’ll also create an awesome cover design to go with it.
World History Tour

1000 Paper Cranes: Rituals of Hope and Healing

In this class we will discuss ways rituals and rites have been incorporated into cultures throughout the world across history and how we can participate in the ones we choose for growth. We will be discussing various religious and spiritual traditions from a historical viewpoint and practicing several simple rituals, including participation in the “Peace Crane Project”, a movement inspired by the memory of a young woman named Sadako.
The Art of Handmade Books

Books have been made for centuries by cultures around the world to hold our histories and our stories. They are undeniably a large part of our human identity and can be appreciated not only for the stories they hold, but also for their value as visual and tactile works of art. We can make our own unique books using the same kinds of techniques that have been used since the first books were made hundreds of years ago. Each book project will be personalized with many kinds of art mediums, including paints, stamps, paper products, and recycled or “found” materials. Course fee covers everything you’ll need to create several books, but feel free to bring any additional art materials you’d like to incorporate into your work.

The journey from childhood to adulthood is one of the most significant stories of our lives, and each person’s coming-of-age pathway is strewn with questions, wonders, difficulties, and triumphs. Many great pieces of literature explore these adventures so vividly that, when we read them, we can recognize pieces of our own stories and feel supported, connected, and understood.
This class will be an introduction to great stories from American Literature that have a lot to say on the topic of growing up. We will explore tales from multiple genres, from Huckleberry Finn and Little Women to Ender’s Game and A Wrinkle in Time, and participate in meaningful activities each day that will help bring stories to life.

Have you ever wondered about the origins, meanings and use of the different symbols and signs of early America? (you know you have). This course will discuss these from a historical perspective and detail those origins, meanings and use from the American Colonial through the Revolutionary eras.
As a culminating project students will make and present a symbol that reflects the ideals found in the eras discussed that could have been used in the time covered.

Have you ever had a boo boo and had a need of a bandage? This course is a non-certification course on what to do until the ambulance arrives. Disaster Preparedness & Response

Did you know that Utah is prone to earthquakes? What will happen in Utah during an earthquake? Are you ready? How will you respond? Utah, on average, has 700 earthquakes per year, with an average of 2% of those being felt. Are you ready for the “big one.” This course will cover basic earthquake preparedness skills and how to respond to damage caused by earthquakes. Students will participate in a small culminating activity at the end of the class.

Creative Writing 101: Short Story, Poetry, Picture Book

Calling all writers! In this course we'll study the craft of creative writing, optimizing our time by focusing on shorter works. The first week we'll look at the craft techniques writers use to create the best short stories, poetry, and picture books. Then you will choose the genre you would like to create yourself. Week two will include a more focused look at your genre of choice, and you will write a selection of poems, a short story, or a picture book (with or without pictures).

Ever wondered about the world-building of Star Wars? For example, what is canon and why has the canon changed? Or have you ever wondered why the story of Luke Skywalker seems kind of familiar? For this course, we will delve deeper into the world of Star Wars. We will discuss the Creation of Star Wars and how George Lucas “built” the world of Star Wars (ahem, he actually borrowed familiar motifs from mythology) and how the Hero’s Journey is actually Luke’s story. We will also discuss familiar motifs, literary tropes, and symbolism that is consistently seen throughout Star Wars and other popular literary works and movies. After discussing the basis of the universe of Star Wars, we will discuss the effect of Disney on Star Wars, how the canon has changed, and how fans have continued to influence the story.
Fires in the American West

Ever wondered why we fight fires? Ever wondered what it is like to become a firefighter? Ever wondered what firefighting is actually like? We are going to discuss why we fight fires and how Smokey the Bear has influenced modern perspectives of firefighting. We are going to learn why our traditional approach to firefighting isn’t working (hence the bigger fires in the West) and how historical firefighting approaches were far more effective. We will then discuss how modern fire response is changing and what is being done to create ecosystems that are not as susceptible to fires.
