WGSS Crash Course: Critical Race Theory

Speaker: Dr. Sonja Thomas • Recorded October 21st, 3:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m.

Critical Race Theory has been in the news lately--from Donald Trump's executive action on CRT, to parents at school board meetings voicing their opposition to it being taught in K-12 schools (is it taught in schools?), to news pundits discussing and debating the value of CRT. With everyone weighing in, it can be difficult to find reliable sources and information on what CRT actually is. This lecture will cover the basics of CRT and why it has become such a hot button issue. Dr. Thomas will first give an overview of what CRT is. Secondly, she will examine the racial reckoning of this particular historical moment and why teaching histories of race/racism in the K-12 level has become so contentious. This talk is (roughly) 40 minutes long giving ample time for Q&A/discussion.
