About Shillong:
Shillong is the city capital of Meghalaya State, northeastern India. The city is located in the east-central part of the state on the Shillong Plateau, at an elevation of 4,990 feet (1,520 meters). Shillong first became prominent in 1864, when it succeeded Cherrapunji as the district headquarters. It also has the Pasteur Institute and Medical Research Institute and is the home of North-Eastern Hill University (founded in 1973). The Barapani hydroelectric station lies a few miles to the north. Popular tourist attractions include Ward’s Lake, a lake with a charming wooden bridge; Golf Links; and the Elephant Falls on the town’s outskirts.
