Curriculum Overview

We will use our knowledge of fractions to understand decimals up to the hundredths place; showing how they are related. Students will compare and order decimals, as well as plot fractions and decimals on a number line. Students will study multi-step word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions and decimals. To improve reasoning skills there is a focus on communicating precisely to others in mathematical discussions by constructing viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others in mathematical discussion. In Geometry we identify lines of symmetry and different types of lines and angles in a two-dimensional plane as well as classifying shapes based on properties of their lines and angles. Science 4th Grade

Trimester III

Curriculum Overview

This unit begins by describing the basic components of our solar system. We continue with an observation of the phases of the moon and exploration of the movements of the earth, sun and moon in relation to one another. A highlight is a Skype call with Mission Control at NASA to see the work that goes on behind the scenes in their International Space Program. Students choose a celestial body in our galaxy to research important facts using books and online resources. They create a presentation to share with the class. Then they create and design a creature with special adaptations that allow it to survive on their chosen celestial body. The unit culminates in the Alien Invasion; a school-wide presentation where students display their alien, habitat and visual aids. Kids of all ages come by to explore and be a part of this amazing universe we live in!
