Trimester II


Curriculum Overview

This unit begins with an overview of where myths come from, and what the characteristics of good myths are followed by a unit of critiquing and consuming common myths. Students will compare and contrast how authors from different cultures write about similar themes in stories, myths and traditional literature and they will read fourth grade text aloud with accuracy, expression and appropriate rate. Once students complete myths, they begin briefly reviewing the differences between fiction and nonfiction, followed by learning good strategies on how to research facts, and summarizing only important information. Students conclude this unit with writing a biography successfully.

Math 4th Grade

Trimester II

Curriculum Overview

In the second trimester we will introduce division of a four-digit by one digit number using different visual strategies to illustrate and explain calculations, such as area models, rectangular arrays and place value charts. The students will use their number sense and fact fluency to find factor pairs for whole numbers up to 100, and decide if they are prime or composite. Next we shall be working through multi-step word problems to contextualize students’ learning, emphasizing perseverance in explaining the meaning of the problem and finding an entry point to its solution. Students will extend their understanding to compare and order fractions using a benchmark fraction. In addition to we study how to create and explain equivalent fractions, as well as add and subtract fractions with like denominators. Finally, we will explore how to use the visual strategy of fraction models to explain and justify their conclusions.

Science 4th Grade

Curriculum Overview

This trimester begins by developing students’ concepts of “substances” and “chemical reactions.” We see that chemical reactions enable us to make new materials by transforming the ones we have. The results of these reactions are interesting and sometimes profoundly useful. There will be an emphasis on experimentation and questioning practices in this topic. Then we continue to focus on the physical sciences by developing the idea that sound is an actual thing, a wave of vibrations traveling through the air. Equipped with this understanding, students can begin to make sense of how sound and music work. There will be an emphasis on the engineering and design practices in this topic.

Social Studies 4th Grade

Curriculum Overview

Students will understand what led explorers to set out for the new world in the late 1400s and 1500s. They will be able to explain the complex task of planning a trip and of the tools needed to make new life in your new environment. They will be able to resolve problems which might arise during travel and resettlement, and be able to categorize tools necessary for navigation, give reasons for exploring new lands, and how new products from the Americas impacted their lives. Students will understand the challenges involved in starting over in a new land and will learn specifically about some colonies and the hardships faced by its settlers. They will understand that conflicts sometimes result in wars, and how society is changed due to these misunderstandings.

Mitos y Poesía:

A través de los mitos, reforzará la fluidez y comprensión lectora. A través del proceso de escritura el estudiante redactará sus propios mitos, desarrollará habilidades para aplicar las reglas básicas de gramática (adjetivos calificativos, sustantivos propios y comunes, pronombres personales y artículos determinantes) y de ortografía (uso de mayúsculas, signos de puntuación, interrogación y exclamación,...)

De igual manera, se familiarizará con las obras de diversos autores utilizándolos como inspiración para luego expresar sus opiniones y redactar sus propios poemas. También demostrará la comprensión de palabras al relacionarlas con sus opuestos (antónimos) y con palabras de significados similares (sinónimos). En escritura redactará poemas para expresar emociones y percepciones del mundo a través de figuras literarias (metáforas,, símil, hipérbole…)

In 4th grade students will continue to demonstrate growth in observational skills and the ability to create art from what is observed.

They will review and master the use of elements and principles of art and will employ them to achieve specific purpose, will be able to Identify , describe and generate personal criteria for evaluating and viewing works of art.

In this trimester students focus on the importance of basic fundamentals of soccer : Passes with both feet, Receiving, Shooting in different positions in the field , Dribble the ball with differents parts of the foot,Positioning, Rules the game , know and learn how to apply the rules to play an independent modified soccer game.

Students demonstrate good sportsmanship, respect, fair play and tolerance .Through this activities students designed to develop and reinforce several personal and social skills associated with responsible behavior,safety ,cooperation ,interpersonal behavior receiving and providing feedback praising and accepting others.

Finally in swimming practice full stroke backstroke (drills and full stroke practice), then the students learn to time trial freestyle and play modified water polo.
