ELA/SS 1st Grade

Trimester I


Curriculum Overview

In the first trimester students have gotten to know themselves as readers. They have learned a variety of strategies to be a strong reader such as how to decode words, finding a “just right” reading spot, and how to ask and answer questions about the text. Students have learned how to make text to self connections, describe characters and how to retell a story in a sequential order. In writing we learned how to write in a neat and organized way. Students have learned writing conventions such as capitalization and punctuation. We also planned and published a personal narrative about a moment in our life.

Launching Readers and Writers Workshop (4 weeks) Stamina, picking just right books, writing conventions, writing simple sentences, parts of a book, how to get prepared for reading and writing, choosing a just right place to read and write.

Reading: describing characters, setting, major events, key details, retell, sequencing, inferences, text to self connections.

Writing: Narratives (24th sept-Oct 12) 3 weeks- not publishing- practicing how to think of ideas, develop and add details, writing process, etc.

Brief overview of How to (Oct 15th- Oct 26) 2 weeks- Work on sequence words.

Narratives (Oct 29th- Nov 16th)- Publish narratives.

Math 1st Grade

Trimester I

Curriculum Overview

During the first trimester students revisited number bonds and explored how whole numbers and made of different parts. Students learned a variety of math strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems within 10. They were introduced to different math strategies such as counting on, drawing pictures etc to solve addition and subtraction word problems within 10. Using their knowledge of number bonds they studied the relationship between addition and subtraction and fact families. (ie: 3+4=7, 4+3=7, 7-4=3, 7-3=4).Students will gain understanding of what the equal sign means and be able to tell if an equation is true or false. Students also studied measurement using nonstandard units to analyze which objects are longest or shortest. They demonstrated their knowledge of measurement to order objects from longest to shortest and shortest to longest.

Science 1st Grade

Trimester I


Curriculum Overview

This unit helps students develop the idea that the sun, moon, and stars change position in the sky in ways that are fun to watch and predict. They will explore their own shadows and how they move throughout the day including a basic sundial. We will also discuss the concepts of night and day so students can explore the movement of the earth in relation to the sun.

Social Studies 1st Grade

Trimester I

Curriculum Overview

During the first trimester students will be learning the expectations and procedures of class and the importance of them. They will also reflect on the role of their teachers and how their classroom communities have changed over the years. During September they will look closely at Nicaraguan culture and the different customs and traditions.

Durante las primeras semanas del primer trimestre el estudiante aprenderá las rutinas que se llevarán a cabo para trabajar en centros de escritura y lectura, comenzará a crear resistencia lectora de manera independiente. Iniciará sus primeros escritos a través de dibujos además aprenderá, compartirá y realizará actividades sobre la cultura y tradiciones Nicaragüense conmemorando el dia de la Independencia.

Narrativas Personales

En esta unidad el estudiante desarrollará su curiosidad al indagar experiencias breves y memorables en sus vidas mediante la escritura de narrativas personales organizando sus ideas para luego redactar pequeños momentos vividos en casa, escuela, con/sobre familiares, amigos incluyendo sus sentidos, sentimientos poniendo en práctica el uso correcto de la mayúscula y los signos de puntuación. El estudiante dará respuesta a la lectura a través de su opinion de libros leídos en voz alta o de manera independiente.

Art 1st Grade

Trimester I

Curriculum Overview

Students in 1st Grade will continue to learn art vocabulary and about the importance of the elements and principles of art, which they will use to create a more realistic work of art. They will experiment with different art techniques and will understand that different techniques produce different outcomes.

Students will demonstrate the ability to sustain focus when engaged in art activities, while building upon previous learning with regard to self-expression and the use of a range of art tools and materials.

Students will be introduced to art from other cultures, and will begin to recognize that artworks have similarities and differences, and will be able to share those observations with other.

Music 1st Grade

Trimester I

Curriculum Overview

Students will develop music skills such as reading, writing, improvisation, listening and movement. Students will read melodic contour of simple melodic repertoire using icons on the board, then will be able to read the rhythm from traditional rhythm notation. Also they will be able to write the melodic contour of simple repertoire using icons on the board. Later on, they’ll be able to write rhythms using traditional notation. Students will be able to read simple repertoire with hand signs, traditional notation with solfege, and then staff notation. Students will internalize, analyze, and create a visual representation of so-mi through kinesthetic, aural, and visual activities. Read quarter and eighth note patterns in known songs.

Students will internalize, analyze and label a beat with no sound or quarter rest, through kinesthetic, aural, and visual activities. Students will be able to write music, improvise melody, and notate repertoire using so and mi.

Technology 1st Grade

Trimester I

Curriculum Overview

In this trimester students learn how to be safe online, visit only teacher-selected websites, use basic navigation skills, switch between tabs and close tabs. They also demonstrate respect for others works or devices, use the classroom technologies carefully and correctly. Then students learn the importance of use proper hand and body position when using computers. They identify mouse actions; pointer, right click, double click and drag and drop. First graders use correct vocabulary to describe digital technologies as CPU, keyboard, monitor, mouse, printer, scanner, speakers. They meet and locate keyboarding basic keys and functions. Finally students know how to login and logout from Windows 10, Operating System.

Physical Education 1st Grade

Trimester I

Curriculum Overview

Students learn and practice the basic technical fundamentals of modified Volleyball, such as passing, throwing, know the basic rules to play and work as a team. For modified Basketball, students learn the basic fundamentals of shooting, passing, positioning, running, dribbling and how to work together as a team. For modified Soccer, students learn to control the ball, passing, dribble, how to move, know the basic rules to play and work as a team.

Students develop games and skill exercises based on the development of basic movement, cognitive and social skills like; running, balancing, jumping, throwing, catching, shooting, playing tag games, kicking. Students work on general physical development exercises that contribute to acquisition and improvement of physical qualities, such as, speed and agility.

Through this activities students develop and reinforce several personal and social skills associated with responsible behavior, safety ,cooperation ,interpersonal behavior, praising and accepting others.
