Secondary students at ANS have the chance to participate in a wide range of clubs designed to enrich their personal and academic growth. These clubs promote social responsibility, creativity through writing and film, environmental awareness, debate skills, and academic excellence.
Options include Math Leagues, Ecuación Futuro, Poetry Club, Debate Club, and more, providing valuable experiences that help students develop leadership skills and explore their passions.
On Wednesday, the secondary faculty engaged in SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) training designed to enhance energy, focus, and overall well-being.
The session offered valuable opportunities for team-building, fostering stronger relationships, and teaching effective stress management techniques through relaxation exercises.
Teachers also deepened their understanding of self-awareness and reflected on its critical role in their professional and personal lives.
Our 6th and 9th grade readers have been actively building reading habits by creating consistent routines, choosing books matching their interests and skill levels, and writing thoughtful responses to their reading.
These responses show their ability to understand and comprehend literature, with a focus on how the plot of a story or drama develops through a series of episodes. They completed this work by demonstrating their comprehension through a creative and well-organized reading project.
Attached are some pictures of our work with the reading project in 6th and 9th grade.
This week, our AP Language students engaged in a collaborative exercise focused on refining their rhetorical analysis skills. Working in pairs, they reviewed their answers using color coding to ensure all key elements were clearly identified. This hands-on activity fostered peer learning and empowered students to strengthen their analytical writing through examples, constructive feedback, and revision.
Our ELA 11/12 students start each class with independent reading, building connections and developing solid reading habits. With the freedom to choose their books, students are more engaged, exploring texts at or above their reading level.
This week, our 7th grade students have been deeply engaged in the unit on Investigating Characterization. The focus has been on understanding the perspectives of both main and minor characters in various texts.
Students are exploring how to investigate the viewpoints of different characters. They are learning to ask insightful questions to infer information from characters' dialogues, actions, and behaviors. Through group discussions and activities, students are sharpening their analytical skills to better understand character motivations and development
In this Grade 8 ELA class, students are working on synthesizing their rough notes, annotations, and jottings into a coherent and well-organized piece. They examined various examples, exploring different formats and styles, and identified the key information each one contained.
The focus was on understanding the differences between rough notes and polished work, emphasizing the importance of rethinking, reorganizing, and synthesizing information effectively in their notebooks.
Grade 10 students are nearing the completion of their first independent reading books and will present book talks to their classmates on September 12th and 13th. They are also drafting personal narratives, which could serve as the foundation for their future college essays.
Grade 12 AP Literature students have been exploring literary analysis through short stories, honing their skills on the multiple-choice section of the AP exam, and refining their critical argumentation through focused paragraph writing.
This week in Modern Language classes (Spanish, French, and Chinese), students are immersing themselves in vocabulary building and exploring the cultural contexts in which these languages are used.
They are actively participating in group discussions, role-plays, and interactive games to practice newly introduced vocabulary in real-life situations.
Through engaging activities like word games, storytelling, and multimedia resources, students are not only expanding their language skills but also deepening their understanding of how language is used in various contexts. In our Language classes, engagement is a key focus, with students collaborating in pairs and small groups to foster communication and peer learning.
Connecting Art & Science
This week in PAW (Connecting Art & Science), as always, we combined art with science in some exciting experiments! We created a crystal garden while exploring the wonders of capillary action, and painted a bubbly masterpiece using a baking soda palette. By adding drops of vinegar, we observed a fascinating chemical reaction that transformed our artwork right before our eyes.
