I ANI Olympics

Welcome!

This website was created for us to report the highlights of the I ANI Olympics. Some students will act as journalists during the event.

This webpage will be 100% students oriented. Some teacher/staff are designed to be their supervisors.

Enjoy it and have fun!

Welcome

Our inaugural ANI school-wide Olympics was held on Monday the 5th of July, taking place over the course of the entire day. There was something for everyone, as we had multiple events in both competitive and non-competitive categories. There were a few organisational hiccoughs and readjustments to plans as we settled into the swing of things (as is to be expected when executing anything for the first time with over 600 students). Myself and my team of dedicated journalists were zipping around from event to event, trying not to miss any of the action in order to bring you the inside scoop!

The name of the game was participation and giving it your best go. The focus was not on playing the competitive games to the letter, as not every participant was as familiar with the rules as others, but playing with integrity and inclusivity as a team and displaying a principled attitude with great sportsmanship.

The Weather Gods turned it out for us with an absolutely stellar day of sunshine and mild temperatures, although the field was frozen and shrouded in a low-hanging mist in the early hours of the school day! The crispness of the morning shortly burned off, just in time for the first event- Cross Country AIMS trials. This was followed by Athletics (discus and sprints), team sports, non-competitive games, and capture the flag. A day of active fun was had by all; many thanks to the efforts of both the staff and students in making this a day to be remembered.

As with any media, the students taking on the role of journalists have each captured their own take on the day's events, interviewing students and teachers alike throughout the course of the day. Here’s what they have to say about the proceedings.

Highlights

Netball year 8’s

A player on the red team fell on their stomach and a watcher got hit with the ball.

While blocking the ball the blue team hit a player from the other team on the head luckily not hurting them. Most players were stepping with the ball with no one noticing. One player missed the hoop but caught it and scored their team a goal. Both of the teams were good at blocking but unfortunately another block and hit happened but this time in the stomach. Overall the winners were red team Rm 6/7. - Mia Ohlsen, Room 10

Highlights

Welcome to the Zayan Gazette

We had he ANI olympics yesterday (publishing this doc was 9:01 6/7/21)

Samanvi says ‘The equipment hasn't arrived for discus so we are practicing our stances”

Discus was supervised by Miss Ironside And Matua Steven Van Nes.

9:40 here at football where Aidan Hennessy says “I mostly enjoy sports because it’s fun” then tells the reporter to come see his match at basketball at 11:00.

Maazz Khan says “ i Like being goalie because I get to pick the ball up and throw it and catch it”. Then discus finished and Fergus Crump Y7, Milly Y7 and Francisco Y8 these 3 people had gotten the farthest thrown discus.

Back to football, room 29 had made it to the semi finals but had no time to play the finals even though they had gotten into the finals. Naitik Sharma says “I like football because of the passing, catching and throwing the ball around” RM 29 was so annoyed they wanted a rematch but before all of Y8 basketball was happening but from the looks of it the blue bibs were winning. - Zayan Mohammad, Room 29

Quick Quotations

Not only was today fun and exciting, the weather was perfect too. Here are what some people thought about the day:

“Feeling really competitive, energised, and ready to win!”

-Utam Rm 3 (when she was about to play basketball in the middle block.)

“Very pumped and excited to play football.”

-Grace Phillips Rm 3 (at the beginning of the day when things were just about to start.)

“Really good and exciting. The weather was fabulous but it was a bit frosty this morning for sprints. Being proud of my students would be an understatement. I have leftover sausages and mushrooms for dinner to boost my energy. The day is going well and everyone looks like they're enjoying themselves. We get to try new things especially for the people who don't do as many sports in class. Great for team building and getting to know other people from different ILE’s.”

-Matua Steve (when he was watching the netball in the middle block.)

Students enjoyed their time and tried their best although they may not have won. The results weren’t as important to them compared to how much fun they had. It was the fact that they were able to play sports with other students that made them happy. The students below demonstrated this:

“The feeling of crossing the finish line was very satisfying. Although there were people in front of me, it still felt great. My feet were a bit numb due to the cold and the wind blowing against my face felt very refreshing.”

-Daffny Che Rm 3 (after they finished their sprints on the field which was in the morning.)

“I was having fun throughout the game even though I got a bit annoyed at the players. They may have had a different skill level than me, but it was still enjoyable”

-Jessy Flack (after their first game of netball in the first block.)

“We were short on players so we got thrashed in football. The score was 4:1. It was really fun though!”

-Jag Frost Rm 3 (after their first football game in the middle block)

Everyone was energetic and optimistic. They would never think negatively and always look to the bright side; despite knowing that they’ve lost. It was funny to watch how Room 3 were cheering when their name was called out in most of the loser play offs.

“We’re going to win this netball game!”

-Carolyn Yang Rm 3 (before the netball game had started in the first block.)

“Being subbed into the game in the last few minutes was fine. I haven’t played in a while and it was funny to watch people get mad over my height.”

-Tony Tan Rm 3 (after their second game of netball in block two)

“He can jump though. Yeah he can jump”

-Daffny Che and Carolyn Yang Rm 3 (refer to above.) - Kai-Chi Liu, Room 3

Write about a particular sport

Year 8 Netball - ILE 4-5 vs ILE 13-14

There was certainly a lovely display of sportsmanship from the players along with magnificent teamwork. There were a lot of laughs and cheers, but of course, there were quite a few downsides. During netball, people are bound to get hit with the ball, some get hit in the face, some get hit in the shoulder, sometimes the balls even hit the audience. As you may know, netball is a non-contact sport, but occasionally on accident, some contact may occur. Unfortunately this causes some players to get upset when the contact is not noticed by the ref. During netball, you are not allowed to move from where you’re standing when holding the ball. Again, often by accident, people occasionally take a few steps, once again upsetting the other players when it goes unnoticed. Because of the rainy and cold weather that’s been happening recently, the half of the court, which was the half in the shade, was wet and slippery. Meanwhile the half in the sun was dry, causing some people to slip when crossing the half. In the end, after a rather close game, ILE 4-5 ended up victorious. We interviewed two players from the losing team for their opinion.

Caitlyn Sivaganesan and Ruxin Chen, both said that the match was “pain” and that there was a lot of contact and movement that went unnoticed by the ref, and that made them rather upset.

Year 7 Netball - ILE 23-24 vs ILE 29-30

This court was entirely in the shade, not giving it that good of an opportunity to dry, quite a few people almost slipped, and quite a few people did. There were quite a few missed shots and it took a while for the game to get more interesting. The first point scored got a lot of cheers from the audience, who were all waiting for the game to get more interesting. Lots of people tried their hardest but the winner was ILE 23-24.

Year 7 Soccer - ILE 23-24 vs ILE 29-30

This game was definitely very loud, the uni barn was filled with the sound of cheers and yelling from both the players and the audience. There were many impressive blocks from the goalies and quite a few cool head hits/blocks. Quite a few times the players kicked too hard, and the ball would go in the wrong direction, such as the audience, or the frame of the goal, making quite a few of the audience leave, as they probably didn’t wish to get hit by a soccer ball. After a rather loud game, there was no winner and it was a tie with 1 all. Thomas Roberts, a goalie during the game, said that he was very nervous, but in the end was somewhat proud that they didn’t lose.

Year 7 Soccer - ILE 25-26 vs ILE 27-28

Compared to the last yr 7 soccer match, this game was much quieter, the players hardly talked. Unfortunately, no talking meant rather bad communication, as no one really seemed to look like they knew what they were doing. Another factor would probably be that there were less audience members cheering during the game. But once they got to the second half of the game, they began to talk, improving their performance. It appeared that some of the players weren’t trying as much as the others. Their kicks were rather calm compared to the last game. One time the ball slowly rolled into the goal, and no one moved to stop it, which was rather sad to watch. But even though there were less people trying, there were more points scored than the last game. With ILE 27-28 winning with a score of 4-2.

Year 7 Capture The Flag - ILE 23-24 vs ILE 29-30

There was quite a lot of hesitation during the game. At the start, they all ran over to the halfway line, but stopped before crossing over. It was rather sad to watch, but there were a lot of cheers and encouragement from the audience. The field has been rather muddy recently, because of this, there were a lot of people who slipped whilst running across the grass. But once the game progressed, there were a lot of very fast runners going for the flag. Many points were scored by ILE 23-24 which deemed them the winners.

ANI OLYMPICS REPORT

Some people’s comments on the netball games:

Erena Haira-burns -Before the game, I felt a bit nervous but after the game I felt very disappointed because thought my team could have done better, I also thought this game wasn’t so challenging and I rate it four out of ten for challenge because there was no one defending me and it was easy to pass the ball.”

Ravneel Prasad - I feel very proud because we didn’t know each other but our teamwork was so good that we were able to win! I have also been practicing (not technically for this game though). I rate this game a 6 out of 10 for challenging because the other team weren’t that competitive and I had full trust and confidence in my team.”

Maya Mahony - “I felt pretty excited because I play for a netball team myself and the competition level wasn’t much in the second quarter since people were worn out after the first quarter.”

Adhem Youssef - “I felt excited before the game but after it was disappointing because our team lost.”

(Teacher) Miss Pielichaty - “I think that all the teams were pretty close since they all showed great sportsmanship and all of them were very competitive. The most competitive round I saw was probably rooms 21/22 vs 23/24 with a score of 5 and 4.

Some questions for more players:

Q- How do you feel about winning?

Willa Griffin-Mclean - “I feel really good.

Georgia - “Amazed, great, happy and very competitive.”

Q- Do you feel bad for your opposing team? Tell me the reason why as well.

Annie Mahe - “Yes, kind of. That’s because they didn’t really know how to play properly.

Q- Did you have fun playing the game?

Jayani Parthipan - “Yeah, I did.”

Q- Which team got the first point?

Shuruthy Nanthivarman - “Our team.”

Q- How many points did your team get overall?

Jeremy - “My team got 6 points and my opposing team got none.”

Q- Did you find the game challenging?

Miguel Ragat - “Nah, not really.”

Q- Were you hoping to win?

Vai Fa’ Anunu - “Um… not really. I was not hoping to win because the other team looked pretty tough.”

Write about students behaviour and happiness

Imagine your baking cookies. Every time you attempt to make these gooey chocolate desserts they change. Maybe one time your cookies are too hard, maybe another time there wasn’t enough chocolate. Well your cookies may never be perfect, one thing always stays the same. The cookies you made most recently will always be better than the first batch you made. Yesterday A.N.I made their first batch of cookies. Well, to anyone on the outside, A.N.I’s cookies were just a regular batch but to anyone who cared to peer into the gooey golden interior, this was not the case.

The A.N.I olympics occurred on Monday the 5th of July. At the start of the day you could hear Mr Carlos exclaim how this was the first olympics. Well let me tell you; the first time is never the charm. After I wandered out onto the field; eager for a story to cover, I spy Raamis looking rather upset and arguing with Eric. Curiosity called me in to give them an interview

“What’s going on?” I ask

Raamis: These games are flawed! The Sub system isn’t controlled and one kid controls his whole ILE. It was my turn to go in but Eric pushed in front of me!

Me: Eric what’s your thoughts on this?

Eric: I thought it was my turn to go in!

Me: Raamis any ideas on how to solve this?

Raamis: There should be a halftime to properly organise subs.

Eric: Yes I agree.

Me: So what exactly made this issue arise in the first place?

Raamis: One student is controlling the whole game and it is not clear who the supervising teacher is.

After the interview something became clear to me. In the rush to have these olympics commence and in the excitement which was proposed to take place. Management was practically non-existent.

I think this is a clear sign that practice makes perfect. I guess the reason we couldn’t have a half time is due to having so many students in such a little amount of time I hope that when the next olympics rolls around A.N.I can learn from their mistakes and create a more enjoyable and fair environment. - Jozef Bycroft-Divet, Room 15

ANI’s olympics 2021 july 5 is the first ANI olympics ever and its safe to say it was a success

We had a wide variety of sport so that there was a sport for everyone, these sports consisted of

.capture the flag

. football

. basketball

. netball

. 100m race

. 50m race

. discus

And coming from someone who is not the biggest fan of sports and the most athletic person in the world, I have to say even I enjoyed it .

Capture the flag

By far probably the most popular event of that day with lots of students running about on the field supporting their team mates and coming up with plans and trying not to get tagged. Everyone did amazing and showed a lot of support.

There were alot of people who did really well but

Frankie Syers from room 29 year 7 was a true leader and helped her team to be the best that she could be

Ava Harvey from room 30 was risk taker and helped tag anyone who was on her team's side of the field.

Anthony Loo from room 29 helped his team by tagging all of the people on his team's side and making sure that none of them got to the flag. - Naomi Poynter, Room 29

Interviews (by Marcus Liu)

Fernando Montesinos

“What was your team’s strategy?”

“My team’s strategy was communication” “communication is one of the most important parts of sports”

“Why do you think you lost?”

“I’m not saying our team was but I think the other team was more sporty and when the other team attacked, we didn’t know how to defend”

ILE 13,14 vs ILE 4,5 Netball lost

Thurston Checkley

“What was your team’s strategy?”

“I didn’t know how to play and because we had no strategy”
