The goal of Beyond GDP is to create and maintain an index of societal welfare that goes beyond what can be derived by GDP, the gross domestic product, alone. Based on four main categories derived by grouping the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, a CMU Tartan Index of Progress (CMU TIP) was created by combining individual ratings from the different categories of societal progress. The final cumulative rating is determined on a scale from 0 - 100—where a rating of 100 designates an ideal state of society. There are various levels of the CMU TIP, where each higher level of the index takes the existing categories analyzed and increases their specificity by breaking the original indicators into multiple factors to be reexamined.

Our main motivation for this research project is that although GDP is used universally to measure countries performances, it is of limited scope. It fails to reflect other aspects of social development and its role as an indicator is grossly misrepresented in politics and the media.
