Affectionally known as "BVW," this is a venerable first-semester course for all entering ETC Masters students. Essentially, we split the incoming student body into groups of five and then ask them to create a number of different interactive experiences that are designed to test their teamwork and technical skills.
Originally designed and taught by Jesse Schell, this one of the core game design courses at ETC, intended for students who are considering game design as a career. I aim to teach the principles and practices of professional game designers, with a specific focus on game system design and simulating different work contexts (content design, big AAA design team, solo indie/freelance gigs) that new designers might find themselves in.
This is a new mini-course for the first half of Spring 2024, taught in collaboration with the head of IDeATe's Physical Computing Lab. This time, the theme of the course will be electro-mechanical games -- the pre-digital arcade games, from the pinball era and before, that laid the foundation for later video games. Our goal is to build a couple of arcade machines to showcase at spring Carnival.
Originally designed by Jonaya Kemper, I stepped in last minute to teach this course during my first semester at CMU. It was a great opportunity to share a medium and scene that I love with a group of undergraduate and graduate students.
