CMU Mechatronics Project 2023

Team A - StairMasters

Project Description

The goal of this project is to build a mechatronic device which is capable of vacuuming stairs. In the past decade there have been many successful vacuuming robots that have made their way into the mainstream, the Roomba being the most recognizable of these systems. Roomba's and similar systems are capable of vacuuming a single floor of a home by leveraging basic sensing technologies and primitive mapping technologies, allowing for a single system to feasibly clean an entire floor of your home autonomously while remaining lightweight and cost-effective. However, there remains a need in the market for a system that is capable of cleaning multi-level structures. For use in a typical household, this would necessitate a robot which can climb stairs to clean multiple levels with one robotic system.

StairMaster solves this problem, by providing a fully-autonomous, lightweight, and cost-effective system which is capable of quickly cleaning stairs as it moves between different levels in the average consumers home.
