TCI Tasks

The TCI involves a range of different tasks that require team members to collaborate in various ways to perform them successfully. For all tasks types, we create versions that are both verbal and nonverbal, that do not require specific pre-existing knowledge to complete, and that vary in the level of interdependence required among members.

Problem Solving Tasks

In problem-solving tasks, there is a single correct answer and the team's job is to figure out which member knows it. Our task battery incorporates both verbal and nonverbal versions of these tasks; for example, in one of them, team members solve a set of puzzled by selecting the missing piece from the eight options presented that best completes the pattern, and fill it in on the answer sheet. Some items are much more difficult than others, and there are way too many for any one person to do in the time allotted, so team members need to divide up the work so that as many items are answered as accurately as possible in the time allowed.

Generate Tasks

These tasks involve coming with as many and as creative a set of ideas as possible. The TCI includes both verbal and nonverbal versions of these tasks. Teams are rewarded more for unusual or creative ideas than common ideas.

Execute Tasks

In these tests team members need to complete a set of tasks that require swift and careful coordination of individual member inputs as accurately as possible. Teams are scored by how much they accomplish, and lose points for errors.

Memory Tasks

In these tasks teams are exposed to a large amount of information which they collectively need to remember and retrieve at a later point in time. For example, in one task, different words flash in different parts of a large grid on the screen and members need to coordinate to remember different words so that their memory is as complete as possible.
