What I hear I forget.
What I see I remember.
What I do I understand.
We can be thankful to the unknown author of this old adage. It neatly summarizes the secret of how we learn.
Hearing, seeing and doing are an important triad in the learning process. Hearing and seeing each involve only one of our senses; doing involves all of them. Thus, doing provides a complete experience of what we are trying to learn. We may long forget the words used by our teacher, but seldom forget the experience of practicing what we have seen and heard.
The Rosicrucian method of study incorporates this philosophy by its emphasis on experimentation and group activities. But the teacher can only provide the hearing, the seeing and the atmosphere for learning. The doing is up to the student.
If all you do is read your monographs, you are missing 2/3 of the experience. If all you do is come to convocation and listen to the discourse, you are missing 2/3 of the experience.
Participation in Rosicrucian activities such as Conclaves, Mystical Weekends, Mystical Retreats, Initiations and group experiments balances your learning experience. Only then can you truly say, "what I do I understand."
