The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a globally recognised non-formal education programme that empowers young people aged 14 to 24 to explore their potential, build essential life skills, and contribute positively to their communities.
Founded in 1956 by HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, the Award was designed to challenge young people outside the classroom through a framework of self-development that is voluntary, non-competitive, flexible, and available to all.
The programme operates in over 130 countries and territories, and millions of young people participate each year — building confidence, developing resilience, and preparing for adulthood.
Participants design their own Award experience by selecting one activity from each of the following sections:
Voluntary Service – Giving back to the community
Physical Recreation – Improving health and fitness
Skills – Developing a new interest or talent
Adventurous Journey – Working as a team to complete an outdoor expedition
(Gold level only) Residential Project – Taking part in a purposeful experience with new people
Each section must be completed regularly over a set time period, and students are supported throughout by trained Award Leaders and Assessors.
In a world that values grades and academic success, the DofE Award provides an opportunity for young people to show who they are beyond the classroom.
