Ocean, Atmosphere, and Climate Unit

Below you will find links to each of our class presentations. These can be used to help students review information that has been presented in class throughout the unit. While these presentations do not fully capture the material covered in class, they can be used as a tool to reinforce key concepts.

Chapter 1-

Students are introduced to their role as climate scientists, investigating whey Christchurch's air temperature decreases during El Nino years. Students begin exploring the relationship between air temperature and energy transfers. Through activities with the simulation and hands-on materials, students discover how energy is transferred to the air as they investigate why different locations on Earth have different air temperatures. They learn that distribution of temperature on Earth's surface depends on a location's distance from the equator.

Chapter 2-

Students investigate how ocean currents cause changes to energy transfer and air temperature by obtaining information from an article and gathering evidence from a physical model and a simulation. Students construct explanations and visual models of how ocean currents affect the temperature of Christchurch, New Zealand

Chapter 3-

Students investigate the factors that determine how ocean currents move and how changes to these factors can affect the energy transferred to and fromt he air. They analyze evidence from an article, a physical model, and a simulation in order to construct explanations of what causes Christchruch, new Zealand, to experience coller air temperatures during El Nino years.
