What is Positive Behavior Intervention Support?

PBIS is a systems approach to enhancing the capacity of schools to educate all children by developing research-based, school-wide, and classroom behavior support systems.PBIS is designed to promote and maximize academic achievement and behavioral competence. It is a school-wide strategy for helping all students achieve important social and learning goals. We know that when good behavior and good teaching come together, our students will excel in their learning. Powers Elementary is proud to be a part of this exciting initiative.

What is PBIS at our school?

We have adopted a unified set of classroom and school wide expectations. Students will see these rules posted throughout the school and your child will be learning about them and what they look and sound like here at school. Our unified classroom expectations are as follows: Being Kind, Respectful, Responsible and Showing Pride. Look for more information in the coming weeks about what these look like in different parts of the school and how students are rewarded for showing these attributes. By teaching the expected behaviors in a positive way, we are providing a common language for everyone in our building, including students, teachers, and staff. We believe that by helping students practice good behavior, we will build a school community where all students can learn. We encourage you to use these same words in conversations with your child. Having consistency from home to school deepen the impact of this effort.
