ALEKS is a research-based, online learning program that offers course products for Math, Chemistry, Statistics, and more. Rooted in 20 years of research and analytics, ALEKS is a proven, online learning platform that helps educators and parents understand each student's knowledge and learning progress in depth, and provides the individual support required for every student to achieve mastery.
Students are required to complete 10 topics OR 1 Knowledge Check in their ALEKS Learning Path each week. Each new week will begin on Monday and will need to be completed by Sunday at midnight. Students will be given one class period per week to complete this requirement, but it is still expected to be done in the event of an absence.
Periodic Knowledge Checks will be presented after every 20 topics practiced AND 5 hours of practice to measure skills the student has mastered. They are to be completed as they appear.
Students are to keep an ALEKS notebook. Each time a student works on ALEKS they are to record the date and topic and any notes or work needed to complete the topic. This notebook may be used on any future Knowledge Checks.
A topic is considered "mastered" on the ALEKS pie after getting it correct on a Knowledge Check.
Calculators are permitted while working in ALEKS.
Each lesson includes a lesson summary that describes the key mathematical work of the lesson and provides worked examples when relevant. Students can use this resource if they are absent from class, to check their understanding of the day's topics, and as a reference when they are working on practice problems or studying for an assessment.
Each lesson is followed by a practice problem set. These problems help students synthesize their knowledge and build their skills. some practice problems in each set relate to the content of the current lesson, while others revisit concepts from previous lessons and units. Distributed practice like this has been shown to be more effective at helping students retain information over time.
Each lesson includes a few learning targets, which summarize the goals of the lesson. Each unit's complete set of earning targets is available on a single page, which can be used as a self-assessment tool as students progress through the course.
Family support materials are included in each unit. these materials give an overview of the unit's math content and provide a problem to work on with you student .
Grades will consist of:
Practice from the purple workbook pages found in student's math folder. This is checked for completion only at the start of class. 5/5 is attempted, 3/5 if not finished and 0/5 if not started.
Pop-Quiz: At random, the Practice workbook page will be collected after going over it in class. Students should be correcting the practice page in class, prior to its collection.
ALEKS (weekly-Monday through Sunday) 10 Topics or 1 Knowledge Check. This can be checked in the student's ALEKS account. Click on Reports and then "Time and Topic".
Quiz given in ALEKS. Students will have a chance to correct a missed question as they work. Any notes taken by the student may be used.
Mid-Unit Assessment given in Edulastic. A study guide will be given two days before the quiz and reviewed using Kahoot the day before. It will also be posted in Google Classroom for additional practice. Any notes taken by the student may be used.
End of Unit Assessment given in Edulastic. A study guide will be given two days before the quiz and reviewed using Kahoot the day before. It will also be posted in Google Classroom for additional practice. Any notes taken by the student may be used.
McGraw Hill is a problem-based curriculum . Students will spend most of their time in class workin on carefully crafted and sequenced problems. Teachers help students understand the problem, ask questions to push their thinking, and orchestrate discussions to be sure that the mathematical takeaways are clear. Learners gain a rich and lasting understanding of mathematical concepts and procedures and experience applying this knowledge to new situations. Students frequently collaborate with their classmates-they talk about math listen to each other's ideas, justify their thinking, and critique the reasoning of others. they gain experience communicating their ideas both verbally and in writing, developing skills that will serve them well throughout their lives.
This kind of instruction may look different from what you experienced in your own math education. Current research says that students need to be able to think flexibly in order to use mathematical skills in their lives (and also on the types of tests they will encounter throughout their schooling). Flexible thinking relies on understanding concepts and making connections between them. Over time, student gain the skills and the confidence to independently solve problems that they've never seen before.
